What were you doing before you came to work at JN Bentley?
Before joining the Apprenticeship scheme, I finished A-levels then went on to do a year of travelling and working in bars, before joining the business as an Apprentice. I did 18 months as a General Operative, and just over 2 years as a Site Engineer.
How have the projects you have worked on challenged you?
I was thrown in at the deep and to some extent, although I had a good understanding of maths required and some site experience, I still had to challenge myself to quickly learn levelling and how different types of equipment worked and how it could assist me in different situations.
Have you done any additional studying?
I undertook additional learning at Leeds College of Building to further aid my understanding of site management, structures and levelling, this required many hours of work to complete my assignments outside of work.
I also enrolled on JN Bentley's Civil Engineering Development Scheme, and I am in the process of becoming a member at the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) to further broaden my understanding of civil engineering techniques.
Would you recommend JNB as a great place to work, if so, why?
Yes definitely, there is a good team spirit where everyone is involved. Although the company is expanding, there is still a sense that people still know each other and is friendly towards each other. The company has faith in anyone showing willing and will push you to develop yourself, as well as assisting you in the process; both financially and with people to mentor your development.
