  • Understanding and realising the value of digital construction

What do we mean by the term ‘digital’? Rather than simply just a piece of IT or software, digital is the combination of processes, technology, people and information working together to achieve efficiency. Utilising digital construction means to achieve efficiency through the application of those four elements. Those efficiencies don’t just manifest in an optimised construction programme, but branch out to encompass quality, cost, safety and carbon. Digital construction is a broad area, but this article focuses on the use of common data environments (CDE) to share a single source of the truth, and setting out on site with data not drawings, including the use of intelligent machine control; some people might call this 'construction from 3D model data’. Image caption: Digital screen inside the cab of an intelligent excavator Digital screens inside the cabs of intelligent plant at the Komatsu production factory, Durham. The design model is downloaded to the system allowing the operative to visualise the design via the onboard screens and operate the machine exactly to the design. The machine control features help to improve accuracy - auto-stop control, auto grade assist, auto tilt control, minimum distance control and bucket angle hold all mean the operator can safely rely on the system without worrying about digging too deep or damaging the surface. Digital transformation is revolutionising the construction industry and redirecting the project delivery process onto a more sustainable path to the future. Recently, our operational board of directors visited the Komatsu production factory in Durham, to see and hear first-hand how a leading global plant manufacturer – and one of our largest plant suppliers – are developing and delivering innovative solutions for the construction industry. In particular, how intelligent plant is optimising operations, adding value and improving efficiency in project delivery. Image caption: JN Bentley operational board at Komatsu factory visit When we talk about digital construction in JN Bentley/MMB, we’re talking about how we can use digital tools and processes to support the actual construction of our projects. One aspect of this that benefits from digital transformation is getting design information out to sites. Traditionally, we would issue printed drawings with a drawing register and possibly PDF copies too. Instead, by utilising a Common Data Environment (CDE) such as BIM360, all the graphical design data is stored in one place, accessible through the web so everyone involved is working from the same information. Revision information and transmittals are automatically logged, and any technical queries are logged as design issues and assigned to a member of the team, with a deadline to resolve and full audit trail. The site team are able to carry out take-offs directly from the design without requiring specialist CAD software (or getting the scale ruler out!). As-built data can be uploaded back onto the CDE and mark-ups can be digitally integrated with the design, significantly streamlining the completions process. This improves collaboration which is crucial for managing time-constrained or complex capital projects. Using these digital tools to communicate design data is helpful, but what if there was a way of not needing the drawings at all? Our design process is digitally mature, with designs produced in 3D BIM models, from which the 2D drawings are derived from. Digital construction allows us to obtain setting out points directly from the model, increasing time and resource efficiency. Survey instruments can be connected to the CDE through the cloud and design models accessed through those, allowing engineers to fully visualise the design in 3D out on site and to have full ownership of the setting out points . The as-built data that has been surveyed is then uploaded back on to the CDE as the work is completed. Another tool that is being utilised across sites, especially large earthworks projects, is Intelligent Machine Control (IMC). Image caption: Intelligent machine control (IMC) IMC refers to plant and machinery fitted with GNSS receivers and other sensors, allowing the exact location of the blade /bucket to be known against a design model imported into the machine’s system. The operator sees the design on screen and is able to work to complex surfaces without the need for traditional setting out. Key benefits of IMC include: Improved quality and accuracy Reduced requirements for Site Engineers (reduced people-plant interface) Removal of waiting time for Plant Operators who require setting out points from Site Engineers Removal of over digging risk Reduced fuel use and carbon Known below ground services can also be inputted and a no-dig buffer zone set to assist in reducing service strikes On our sites, we encourage teams to complete a digital delivery plan to identify how elements of digital construction might benefit the project and how these can be successfully implemented. - Read more on how we’re embracing digital, including digital construction, in our latest Annual Review (page 36) – read it here. • Success at ICE Yorks and Humber for Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley

MMB and JBA Bentley have enjoyed a successful night at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)’ annual awards in Yorkshire and Humber. Held at the Leeds Marriott Hotel, the annual ICE gala dinner celebrated and showcased the very best of engineering across the Yorkshire and Humber region. JBA Bentley’s flood alleviation scheme at Winteringham Ings to South Ferriby, delivered with the Environment Agency, was presented with a Certificate of Excellence in the Centenary Award category. In the Smeaton Award category, Mott MacDonald Bentley’s scheme with Yorkshire Water at Swinsty Impounding Reservoir Spillway received a Certificate of Commendation. JBA Bentley have successfully delivered flood alleviation works at Winteringham Ings to South Ferriby, on the South Bank of the Humber Estuary. Following severe flooding in 2013, the existing defences and surrounding areas suffered £50m worth of damage. JBA Bentley constructed a range of new defences designed to provide better protection from future flooding, whilst successfully overcoming significant ecological and social challenges. The project has been recognised previously for excellent environmental practice and low carbon delivery by the Green Apple Organisation, as well as by CECA for demonstrating an excellent approach to Health and Safety. At Swinsty Impounding Reservoir, Mott MacDonald Bentley designed and constructed a new reinforced concrete spillway and raised the crest bridge to improve safety at one of Yorkshire Water’s most visited impounding reservoirs. Due to the heritage of the reservoir, many existing structures were re-used to preserve its history and drive carbon efficiency. This is the first award recognition for the project, building on our strong reputation for reservoir safety work in the Yorkshire region. Operations Director, Ian Bester, said, “Well done to the teams involved in both projects. “Maintaining a focus on low carbon delivery and excellent collaboration with our clients has helped us to deliver two challenging schemes that will have a positive impact on the surrounding areas and their communities. “Congratulations to all – it’s fantastic to receive such highly-regarded recognition.” Find out more about our work at Winteringham Ings to South Ferriby at Water Projects Online. • JN Bentley apprentice named Groundworker of the Year by Grimsby Institute

Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education have presented their first ever Groundworker Apprentice of the Year award to Jack Jewkes, a Level 2 GCO groundworker apprentice from the @one alliance collaborative skills team working at JN Bentley. Explaining why Jack was chosen for this award, the judges commended the fact that “Jack has settled in well with JN Bentley, impressing his managers and colleagues with his hard work ethic.” They further commented: “Jack has had to go out of his comfort zone on several occasions and he joined the JNB training manager at the ‘Yorkshire & Humber Speakers for schools’ campaign event in 2021, where he gave a presentation to over 200 pupils about his apprenticeship journey. He has had good progress on his NVQ and has proved to be a good and reliable worker.” Speaking about his win, Jack said: “To be noticed for the hard work and dedication I have put into the apprenticeship so far is overwhelming. Being able to speak to schools on Microsoft Teams about my journey on the apprenticeship, to featuring in the @one alliance newspaper shows that the work you do doesn’t go unnoticed. When starting the apprenticeship I hadn’t much of a clue on what jobs I’d be doing, so I was a bit nervous on what to expect and what was going to be expected of me. Since then, I have done a variety of projects, each one allowing me to learn new skills along the apprenticeship program, include talking in front of a large group of people to being trained on jobs within an experienced gang.” Groundworker apprentices work closely with site engineers to prepare sites ready for construction works to begin, by interpreting design specifications and assisting throughout the process, from conception to completion, working closely with all on-site construction personnel. • Triple success for Mott MacDonald Bentley at ICE East Midlands awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) received three awards at this year’s ICE East Midlands awards gala, all for our project at Stoke Bardolph Thermal Hydrolysis Plant, delivered with Severn Trent Water. The team picked up awards for Large Project of the Year, Team Achievement and Sustainability. Awarded outside of our existing framework agreements with Severn Trent, the new £42m Advanced Anaerobic Digestion facility at Stoke Bardolph turns sewage into biogas that is exported to the gas network and treats the remaining solids so that it meets the highest standards for use as a fertiliser. The aim is to increase the yield and improve the quality of the biogas and cake produced at Stoke Bardolph, products that re-used for power and in agriculture. The team applied our Quality, Cost and Efficiency strategy to see how things could be achieved Right 1st Time, and, with a complex range of mechanical plant, Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) was the key. Having key work packages and mechanical items built away from site meant that on-site demolition and civil work could progress at the same time. Packages were then delivered to site for rapid installation, compared to a traditional on-site approach with a lengthy assembly and installation period. The boiler house is a great example of the benefits that MMC brings. We worked with our expert supply chain to learn from previous projects we’ve delivered together. As a result, the boiler house was manufactured, fully assembled and tested off-site, before being separated into modules for delivery and installation at site. The modular design, including the electrical system, used innovative quick-fit connections between sectors. Our approach saved 26 weeks on site. The energy saving features of this plan, together with the sustainable products being produced (gas to grid and class A agricultural fertiliser), make it another in the growing suite of innovative step change projects that the water sector is implementing. The project has also been named a finalist at the British Construction Industry Awards two years running: in 2021 for Industry Transformation and Innovation, and in 2022 for Utility Project of the Year. (L-R) Steve Clarke (STW), James Hopkinson (MMB), Mark Linney (MMB), Eleanor Rycroft (STW), Nick Braithwaite (MMB), Stephen Rooke (MMB), Sam Craig (STW), Jamie Beech (MMB). • Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley named finalists at British Construction Industry Awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley are proud to have been shortlisted seven times at the 2023 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA). Being named as finalists across the categories demonstrates the variety of work we deliver and recognises the efforts of all those involved, including our people, clients, and partners. Upon being shortlisted, director Steve Tetlow, said, “We are pleased to have been named as finalists in the British Construction Industry Awards again this year. The awards are the most prestigious in our sector and recognise real engineering and construction excellence. “Awards are important because they not only provide external validation for the quality of projects we are delivering with our clients, but they recognise the hard work of our talented teams and suppliers too. “Well done to everyone involved.” Shortlisted projects: Embsay Water Treatment Works – MMB - Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and Utility Project of the Year Our project at Embsay for Yorkshire Water addressed several improvements to secure a resilient and reliable supply of clean water, and ensured these solutions were affordable by implementing value engineering based upon PAS2080 design principles – most notably, ‘Build Less’. We identified an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating the need to build new manganese filters, after Moata Carbon Portal showed that over half of the project’s carbon footprint would be in their construction. Yorkshire Water had previously used catchment-based solutions to address raw water quality and reduce manganese levels. We proposed that process changes to existing plant, rather than constructing new filters, could deliver the same treated water quality parameters. Our solution reduced operating carbon by 130 tonnes of CO2e annually. Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) – MMB – Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and Product Innovation of the Year MMB is a partner on SPA - one of the largest strategic water infrastructure projects in the UK. Taking a forward thinking and innovative approach, the ambitious project is creating hundreds of kilometres of interconnecting mains and associated pumping equipment, to ensure the region is resilient to the risk of drought by securing water supplies for future generations. The entire pipeline has been designed to have the lowest carbon footprint possible, in line with Anglian Water’s pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2030. The project has innovation at its heart, unlocking efficiencies at every stage. MMB trialled and proved the validity of a ‘low water’ approach to commissioning that uses air to drive slugs of water between swabs to clean and disinfect the pipes. Traditional commissioning would have required over 1bn litres of water on SPA. Our approach cut this by approximately 95%. You can read all about SPA at Water Projects Online. Great Yarmouth Tidal Defences – JBA Bentley - Temporary Works Initiative of the Year One of JBA Bentley’s largest projects for the Environment Agency, the £42.9m flood defence scheme has now reached stage 2 completion and will provide better protection to 4,500 homes and business in Great Yarmouth. Without the development of an innovative temporary works solution to facilitate the major quayside flood defence improvement works, Victorian-era Grist Mill would not have been saved. Tasked with using two 300T cranes working in tandem to feed piles to the waterfront, re-usable steel crane pads meant that the operation could take place within a challenging site constrained in size, sitting on a plethora of buried services and surrounded by residents and businesses. The approach made the project viable and at the same time eliminated 9,000 tonnes of stone from the temporary works solution, and reduced carbon by 78%. Read more about the project in this Environment Agency article published on the Government website. Mill Fleam Pumping Station (Project MUNIO) – JBA Bentley – Environmental Project of the Year The £8m scheme – which recently won Medium Project of the Year at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards - is a key piece of flood defence infrastructure, providing heightened protection in Derby city centre during heavy rainfall, an area that has suffered historic river and surface water flooding. Several innovations helped overcome space and time constraints, including 3D and augmented reality to improve resource use and safety; off-site and factory manufactured products reducing site-time and enhancing quality; and collaborative design, commissioning, construction and client teams, ensuring the right solution at the right time. Embodied carbon was monitored and removed, and environmental enhancements implemented, as well as ecological management to reduce disturbance to local bat species. Bradford Beck Culvert Remediation Scheme – JBA Bentley - Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year An excellent example of the benefits of early contractor involvement, this scheme saw JBA Bentley carry out urgent repairs to the cast iron beams spanning the culvert underneath the former Bradford Odeon cinema, to maintain the structural integrity of the building ahead of major renovations. The solution delivered significant cost savings compared with alternative solutions and meant works to transform the venue were not delayed. - Colleagues will present to BCIA judges in September before the winners are announced at a ceremony in October.
