  • JN Bentley remains in top 25% after EcoVadis sustainability assessment

JN Bentley are proud to have achieved a silver medal sustainability rating from EcoVadis, placing us once again the top 25% percentile of companies assessed. EcoVadis is the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, creating a global network of more than 90,000+ rated companies. Their assessment independently evaluates our sustainability practices, scoring our commitments and performance against four key areas: environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. The competitive, year-on-year assessment maintains high standards that encourages organisations to consistently work hard to score high on the assessment and reflects the evolving nature of sustainability. We are particularly proud this year to have scored ‘advanced’ for our environment approach, which recognises our positive impact across areas including nature-based solutions, biodiversity net gain, renewable energy, carbon reduction, pollution prevention, training and knowledge share, environmental stewardship, and legal compliance. Steve Tetlow, JN Bentley Director, commented, “Receiving this prestigious accreditation means a lot to us as a business: we are very proud of our sustainability approach and environmental commitments, including delivering low carbon solutions, promoting an inclusive organisation and procuring with purpose. We constantly seek to make responsible choices across our operations and are pleased that this silver ranking reflects our team’s efforts. The EcoVadis assessment has also provided us with valuable insight into areas where we can continue to improve our performance, helping us shape our approach going forward to meet our commitment to be net zero by 2040 and ensure we remain an employer and partner of choice.” Achieving a silver medal rating demonstrates our ongoing commitment to act responsibly by integrating social and environmental concerns into our business operations. We pro-actively strive to go beyond regulatory compliance when it comes to managing our impact at organisation level and seek to engage our key stakeholders, including our people, clients and supply chain, to implement our sustainability approach in a collaborative way. • Success for MMB and JBA Bentley after two big wins at British Construction Industry awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley have enjoyed a successful night at the prestigious British Construction Industry Awards (BCIAs). JBA Bentley’s project at Mill Fleam Pumping Station was named Environmental Project of the Year, with the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) – on which MMB is a key partner - scooping the Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year Award. The BCIAs celebrate the built environment sector, recognising excellence in project delivery and the hard work of clients, architects, designers, and contractors. Hosted in London, 20 winners were announced, with JN Bentley, MMB and JBA Bentley shortlisted across eight of them. JBA Bentley’s Mill Fleam Pumping Station project was named Environmental Project of the Year. The project has provided the city of Derby with a new flood defence infrastructure asset, heightening protection of the city during heavy rainfall. Overcoming a number of challenging environmental factors, the project was contained in the city centre near a public park that contained bats, birds, and aquatic life. Innovative augmented reality software was used during the work to assist with planning site operations and communicating the presence of buried services to site teams. The technology was beneficial as it provided an enhanced view of the existing site in photographic quality. The BCIA judges were, “Impressed with the level of innovation, such as using augmented reality and it was clear that this contributed to the excellent delivery, safely and on programme.” They also recognised a great outcome from a truly collaborative team. The Strategic Pipeline Alliance (on which MMB is a key partner) also won the prestigious Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year Award. The ambitious project is creating hundreds of kilometres of interconnecting mains and associated pumping equipment, to ensure the region is resilient to the risk of drought by securing water supplies for future generations. The entire pipeline has been designed to have the lowest carbon footprint possible, in line with Anglian Water’s pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2030. Ian Bester, Operations Director for JN Bentley, said: “It’s fantastic to see our teams and projects recognised at this year’s prestigious BCIA’s for excellence in engineering and construction. “This really demonstrates the professionalism, talent and drive that our teams possess to deliver industry leading infrastructure projects and initiatives. “Our winners, finalists and shortlisted teams should all be very proud – congratulations and thank you!” The full list of recognition for JN Bentley, MMB and JBA Bentley is as follows: Mill Fleam Pumping Station (Project MUNIO) – JBA Bentley – Environmental Project of the Year (Winner) Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) – MMB – Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year (Winner) and Product Innovation of the Year (Finalist) Embsay Water Treatment Works – MMB – Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and Utility Project of the Year (Finalist) Great Yarmouth Tidal Defences – JBA Bentley - Temporary Works Initiative of the Year (Finalist) Bradford Beck Culvert Remediation Scheme – JBA Bentley - Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year (Finalist) Anglian Water’s @one Alliance (another alliance on which MMB is a key partner) was also highly commended in the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Initiative of the Year category for its LIFE Fest event. • JBA Bentley celebrates 10th birthday

JBA Bentley is ten years old today! Founded on this day in 2013, the integrated design and build contractor brought together JBA Consulting – one of Europe’s leading specialists in environmental engineering and management, with national civil engineering contractor, JN Bentley. It was soon appointed to the Environment Agency’s Water and Environmental Management (WEM) framework. Working from offices in central Leeds, JBA Bentley began delivering a wide range of environmental and flood management schemes including environmental work, modelling, mapping, emergency planning, feasibility, detailed design and construction. The first scheme hit site in 2014. A second framework soon followed – the Asset Recovery Programme of Works (ARPW) - as did a second office, this time in Peterborough to support our activity in the east of England. 2015 saw JBA Bentley demonstrate its credentials as a trusted supplier to the EA by deploying teams over Christmas to support the recovery efforts following the devastating Boxing Day floods – the first of several instances that teams have since reacted at short notice to support our client. This also began our historic association with the Foss Barrier in York. After carrying out immediate recovery works, we went on to design and build award-winning permanent upgrades to better protect 2,000 properties in the city and make it more resilient to the impacts of climate change. It wasn’t all multi-million-pound projects: the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) framework saw JBA Bentley undertake smaller value schemes across the Midlands, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and East Anglia. We also secured a place on the Marine and Coastal (MCF) framework. Having now established itself, JBA Bentley’s focus evolved to start specialising in the safe and efficient delivery of low carbon solutions, placing sustainability at the forefront of its delivery. This was borne out in subsequent years through schemes including Bentley Ings Pumping Station – recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE); tidal defences in Great Yarmouth – a winner at the British Construction Industry Awards, and a flood alleviation scheme at South Ferriby – a Green Apple Award winner. Its client portfolio began to diversify, the Coal Authority and local authorities benefiting from JBA Bentley’s expertise in environmental engineering. This included a new mine water treatment scheme at Polkemmet in Scotland, and a new pumping station with Derby City Council, engineered to better project the city against flooding. In 2023, works are on-going on a host of exciting projects across the UK – none more so than the Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment Scheme. Here, new flood defences will create 275 hectares of intertidal and freshwater habitats provide food and habitat for a variety of bird species native to the Humber Estuary. Thank you to every colleague, client, supplier, and stakeholder that has contributed to the success of JBA Bentley over the last ten years – here’s to many more! Keep an eye on JBA Bentley's social feeds over the next two weeks as they celebrate ‘ten years in ten days’ through a series of posts looking at the very best of JBA Bentley. • Strategic Pipeline Alliance recognised for excellent digital delivery

Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance, along with their partners including Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), were announced as a finalist in the Digital Transformation category at the Utility Week Awards, held at Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair. The event was attended by UK water companies and other industry-leading utilities companies, with Anglian Water being announced as the winner of the flagship ‘Utility of the Year’ award. MMB and the other Alliance Partners represented the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA), one of the largest strategic water infrastructure projects in the UK. Taking a forward thinking and innovative approach, the ambitious project will create hundreds of kilometres of interconnecting mains and associated pumping equipment. The aim is to ensure the East Anglian region is resilient to the risk of drought by securing water supplies for future generations. The purpose of the Digital Transformation award is to recognise ‘outstanding leadership, ambition and success among utilities in embracing digital opportunities to transform their businesses and deliver better outcomes for customers.’ The Strategic Pipeline Alliance’s submission focused on the use of Geospatial Digital Solutions (GIS) at the heart of all decision making, specifically showcasing how SPA is using the Project 13 Principles to deliver better outcomes. Project 13 is an industry-led initiative that supports an enterprise led approach to the delivery of the UK’s national infrastructure programme. Built on five core principles, of which digital transformation is one, the approach prioritises customers and focuses on long-term social and economic value. GIS is a key component in the development of a Digital Twin for SPA, part of Anglian Water’s wider digital transformation plans. The Digital Twin will assist with asset management and connectivity, unlocking value by enabling improved insights that support better decisions. The Alliance’s use of GIS and Land Management technology (both powered by Moata) offers an innovative way of approaching land access for surveys, improving customer and client relationships. On the SPA project, so far over 10,000 surveys have been facilitated. Following the event, MMB’s Jon Gray, Design Manager working on the SPA project, commented: “We were very pleased to receive this high-level recognition at one of the utility industry’s biggest awards evenings. Our digital transformation strategy forms a core part of the successful delivery of SPA, showcasing the potential of this technology to the wider sector and delivering better outcomes for Anglian Water’s customers. Well done to all involved in the project.” Read more about our work on SPA in our latest Annual Review. • JN Bentley secures additional contracts with Canal & River Trust

Further to the recent announcement confirming JN Bentley as the sole supplier of complex civil engineering works across the north of the Canal & River Trust’s network, the UK based contractor has been appointed to additional contracts with the Trust. The framework will see JN Bentley deliver non-complex civil engineering works such as towpath and access improvements in Yorkshire and the North East and North West of England. Worth up to £300m over ten years, nine parties have been appointed to the new contracts, each working on a regional basis. Coupled with the complex civil engineering contract awarded earlier this month, the frameworks represent some of the largest waterway engineering contracts ever awarded by the Canal & River Trust – the organisation tasked with caring and bringing to life 2,000 miles of canals and river navigations across England & Wales. Jonathan Burton, JN Bentley director, said: “We’re proud to have secured these new frameworks with the Canal & River Trust, off the back of being appointed as their supplier of complex civil engineering projects across the north of England. “We bring a strong track record of safe, sustainable, high quality and innovative delivery to the non-complex contract, with our large directly employed workforce giving us the flexibility needed to carry out schemes of this nature effectively. “In what is JN Bentley’s fiftieth year, we are delighted to celebrate with the addition of an important new client to our portfolio. We look forward to forging a long-term relationship with the Trust and improving the UK’s waterways together.” Contract award follows a thorough 20-month tender period during which JN Bentley demonstrated its civil engineering credentials, evidenced through its experience working with the likes of the Environment Agency and clients across the regulated water sector. • JN Bentley reflects on wellbeing focus in 2021

At JN Bentley we are committed to creating a fun workplace, where people have a voice, feel safe, reach their potential, prosper and where rewards are shared. We know that when we care about our people and they care about each other, they are happy. Wellbeing has been a major focus for the business – like many others – over the past 12 months. Throughout 2021 we have placed added focus on mental health, sharing resources with colleagues and promoting the types of support available both internally through things like our Employee Assistance Programme and outside the business too. Building a wellbeing network Having a network of support can have a huge impact on people’s mental health. As part of our wellbeing approach in 2021, we have grown our cohort of Wellbeing Champions – both on site and in our offices – and developed a library of resources and support materials for colleagues and line managers, accessible through our intranet. These include a series of Wellbeing Toolbox Talks that have been rolled out to site teams. Colleagues share their stories We supported various national wellbeing campaigns throughout the year, including Stress Awareness Month, Mental Health Awareness Week and Movember. As part of these campaigns, colleagues shared their personal stories, telling of their experiences around mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, managing grief and how to cope and thoughts of suicide. We also shared employee stories of physical illness including cancer, personal injuries and long standing illness such as diabetes and the impact that these have had on their overall wellbeing. Images (above): Colleagues support Movember campaign We’re really grateful to those colleagues who shared their stories – these have helped to encourage open conversations around mental health and wellbeing across the business and we hope will give more people the confidence to speak up and reach out for support. Mental Health First Aiders During 2021, we trained Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) across the business and launched an internal MHFA crisis line, a positive addition to our existing wellbeing benefits package. Available to all employees 24/7, the confidential crisis line allows colleagues to access immediate mental health support either through our trained MHFAs or counselling services available through our Employee Assistance Programme. Supporting charities and fundraising The lingering Covid-19 restrictions didn’t stop our colleagues from fundraising to support some great causes throughout the year. With plenty of bake sales, coffee mornings, team events, quizzes and challenges organised, our teams raised over £24,000 for charities including The Samaritans and Movember. Our Company Matching scheme also supported employee efforts, contributing over £3,300 to charitable causes. Images (above): Colleagues taking part in fundraising activities – from charity football matches to muddy 5km runs and marathons. Company-wide activities also brought our teams together during the year. This included a competitive walking challenge – part of our national walking month campaign – which saw teams walk over 33,000 miles. These events not only allowed us to support some great causes but helped to bring teams back together for some well spirited collaborative competition after a challenging 18 months. Thank you to all those that took part! Looking to 2022 We’re really proud of the resilience and positivity our colleagues have shown over the last 12 months and are grateful to those that have shared their personal stories in support of our wellbeing campaigns throughout 2021. Looking to 2022, we will continue to build on our health and wellbeing programme, with a focus on mental health and aiming to further reduce the stigma, encourage positive wellbeing conversations and make sure we are providing the right support for our colleagues. ~ Remember to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news from across the business.
