  • JN Bentley Quantity Surveying development scheme certified by CICES

The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) has certified JN Bentley’s development scheme for quantity surveyors as an ‘Approved Development Scheme’. This means that those who complete the scheme can obtain a nationally recognised professional qualification and achieve chartered status with the institution. Investing in employee training and development is a long-standing tradition at JN Bentley. We recognise the importance of building and maintaining a happy and skilled workforce for the future and are committed to investing in our people, so they reach their potential. Our quantity surveyor development scheme aims to support the career development of our quantity surveyors, helping them to gain the experience, knowledge and opportunities they need to become a competent ‘Professional Quantity Surveyor’. The development scheme aligns with the CICES competencies, whilst being tailored to the specific attributes and skills required of a quantity surveyor at JN Bentley. This enables individuals to complete the in-house programme whilst working towards professional chartership alongside. Paul Ellis, Regional Risk Manager and mentor on the development scheme said: “It’s fantastic to gain certification that our scheme is a CICES Approved Development Scheme for commercial management. This external recognition demonstrates that the JN Bentley development scheme provides our quantity surveyors with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to become a qualified civil engineering quantity surveyor. “I have been a mentor on the JN Bentley development scheme for 10 years and it has been really rewarding to see the development of our quantity surveyors, as they have progressed through the scheme and their careers, many moving into senior commercial roles and achieving professional chartership with the CICES.” - Interested in joining our team as a quantity surveyor? • JN Bentley celebrates its 50th anniversary

JN Bentley celebrates its 50th anniversary today. The construction and engineering contractor was founded on this day (7 December) in 1972. With roots firmly in Yorkshire, it has grown in the years since and now delivers projects with valued clients in a variety of sectors across the UK. A rich heritage JN Bentley began life principally involved in water and sewerage works for the water authorities in Yorkshire, as well as civil engineering works with local councils. It added general building projects to its portfolio in the mid-70s before turning its attention to civil engineering schemes such as pipelines and pumping stations. Image: Learn more about JN Bentley’s history on our heritage pages The organisation increased the range and scale of its building projects in the 1980s, working with the likes of Rolls-Royce and the Metal Improvement Company, with whom it delivered its very first £1m project. The 1990s saw a more civil engineering-focused business once again, particularly through strengthening links with Yorkshire Water. This led to the formation of the hugely successful Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) joint venture in 1999. MMB harnesses the design expertise of global consultancy Mott MacDonald and JN Bentley’s contracting experience to provide a fully integrated design and build service that remains a cornerstone for the company’s continued success in the water industry. The relationship with Mott MacDonald strengthened further in 2014 when JN Bentley joined the Mott MacDonald Group; in the years since, £2bn of work has been delivered together. The 2010s also saw the formation of a second joint venture – this time with environmental consultancy, Jeremy Benn Associates. As it closes in on its tenth birthday, JBA Bentley continues to focus on the safe and efficient delivery of low carbon solutions with the likes of the Environment Agency (EA) and Coal Authority. JN Bentley in 2022 Today, JN Bentley can boast a varied client base, built on trust and the continued delivery of first-class projects. This includes seven of the UK’s largest water companies (Anglian Water, Dwr Cymru Welsh Water, Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent, Thames Water, United Utilities and Yorkshire Water), as well as the EA and Canal & River Trust, local authorities and industrial building clients such as Rolls-Royce, Procter & Gamble and Associated British Ports. It continues to innovate, with a keen focus on digital transformation, sustainability and carbon – all whilst remaining true to its core values of directly employing people and keeping them safe and happy at work. Image: To mark the 50th anniversary, all colleagues were invited to company seminars across the country to celebrate all that makes JN Bentley successful Mott MacDonald Executive Chair, James, Harris, said, “Warm congratulations to everyone at JN Bentley on your 50th anniversary. • JN Bentley reflects on wellbeing focus in 2021

At JN Bentley we are committed to creating a fun workplace, where people have a voice, feel safe, reach their potential, prosper and where rewards are shared. We know that when we care about our people and they care about each other, they are happy. Wellbeing has been a major focus for the business – like many others – over the past 12 months. Throughout 2021 we have placed added focus on mental health, sharing resources with colleagues and promoting the types of support available both internally through things like our Employee Assistance Programme and outside the business too. Building a wellbeing network Having a network of support can have a huge impact on people’s mental health. As part of our wellbeing approach in 2021, we have grown our cohort of Wellbeing Champions – both on site and in our offices – and developed a library of resources and support materials for colleagues and line managers, accessible through our intranet. These include a series of Wellbeing Toolbox Talks that have been rolled out to site teams. Colleagues share their stories We supported various national wellbeing campaigns throughout the year, including Stress Awareness Month, Mental Health Awareness Week and Movember. As part of these campaigns, colleagues shared their personal stories, telling of their experiences around mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression, managing grief and how to cope and thoughts of suicide. We also shared employee stories of physical illness including cancer, personal injuries and long standing illness such as diabetes and the impact that these have had on their overall wellbeing. Images (above): Colleagues support Movember campaign We’re really grateful to those colleagues who shared their stories – these have helped to encourage open conversations around mental health and wellbeing across the business and we hope will give more people the confidence to speak up and reach out for support. Mental Health First Aiders During 2021, we trained Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs) across the business and launched an internal MHFA crisis line, a positive addition to our existing wellbeing benefits package. Available to all employees 24/7, the confidential crisis line allows colleagues to access immediate mental health support either through our trained MHFAs or counselling services available through our Employee Assistance Programme. Supporting charities and fundraising The lingering Covid-19 restrictions didn’t stop our colleagues from fundraising to support some great causes throughout the year. With plenty of bake sales, coffee mornings, team events, quizzes and challenges organised, our teams raised over £24,000 for charities including The Samaritans and Movember. Our Company Matching scheme also supported employee efforts, contributing over £3,300 to charitable causes. Images (above): Colleagues taking part in fundraising activities – from charity football matches to muddy 5km runs and marathons. Company-wide activities also brought our teams together during the year. This included a competitive walking challenge – part of our national walking month campaign – which saw teams walk over 33,000 miles. These events not only allowed us to support some great causes but helped to bring teams back together for some well spirited collaborative competition after a challenging 18 months. Thank you to all those that took part! Looking to 2022 We’re really proud of the resilience and positivity our colleagues have shown over the last 12 months and are grateful to those that have shared their personal stories in support of our wellbeing campaigns throughout 2021. Looking to 2022, we will continue to build on our health and wellbeing programme, with a focus on mental health and aiming to further reduce the stigma, encourage positive wellbeing conversations and make sure we are providing the right support for our colleagues. ~ Remember to follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news from across the business.

  • Success for JBA Bentley at Institution of Civil Engineers Awards East Midlands Merit Awards

JBA Bentley’s project at Mill Fleam Pumping Station in Derby was named Medium Project of the Year at the 2023 Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMAs). The EMMAs celebrate individual and project achievements, recognising the best engineering projects, outstanding individual contributions and innovation across the industry. Mill Fleam Pumping Station (Project Munio) – an £8m scheme for Derby City Council – is a key piece of flood defence infrastructure, providing heightened protection in Derby city centre during heavy rainfall, an area that has suffered historic river and surface water flooding. The scheme was the final phase of Project Munio – a key phase of work to reduce flood risk along the west bank of the River Derwent, and future proof the city against the effects of climate change. Works on site involved the installation of large hydraulic lock gates, sheet piled river walls, a fish refuge area and a new pumping station capable of passing forward flows of 4,500 litres per second. The judges highlighted that ‘the project demonstrated benefits of utilising new technologies and collaboration software.’ Due to space and time constraints, several innovations were implemented on the scheme to meet these challenges, including 3D and augmented reality to improve resource use and safety; off-site and factory manufactured products reducing site-time and enhancing quality; and collaborative design, commissioning, construction and client teams, ensuring the right solution at the right time. Nick Lister, Operations Director said: “It’s fantastic to see the project recognised by the ICE. The new pumping station will play an important role in reducing flood risk in the city. “I know how hard the team have worked to successfully deliver the works – many people thought the programme was unachievable, but the team showed what can be delivered when they come together and operate as one – utilising digital in project delivery to improve safety, drive efficiency and Innovation and aid collaboration. Congratulations and well done all.” - Learn more about The EMMAs here. Don’t forget to follow JBA Bentley on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news from across the business.

  • JN Bentley secures major new civil engineering contract

JN Bentley has been appointed to a major new civil engineering contract with the Canal & River Trust. As part of an arrangement lasting up to ten years, JN Bentley will deliver complex works across the north of the Trust’s network of historic waterways and assets. The only contractor appointed to work on complex assets on the north of the Trust’s network, the framework will see JN Bentley deliver significant repair and restoration projects at reservoirs, embankments, culverts, tunnels and aqueducts. The arrangement will also mean JN Bentley is on hand to respond to instances of flooding or canal breaches. The Canal & River Trust cares for and brings to life 2,000 miles of canals and river navigations across England & Wales; this framework represents one of the largest waterway engineering contracts they have ever awarded, with a potential total value of £500m. The contract has been awarded off the back of a thorough tender process during which JN Bentley demonstrated its ability to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and sustainably - evidenced through its experience working with the likes of the Environment Agency and multiple clients across the regulated water sector. Ian Bester, JN Bentley operations director, said: “We are delighted to be appointed to this new framework with the Canal & River Trust – an important new client for us and one that provides a fantastic opportunity to be involved with preserving and enhancing the industrial and natural heritage of the country. “Securing the framework will allow us to bring our transferrable skills developed from 50 years of experience in the water and environment sectors. We’ll focus on collaborating with the Trust and their partners to deliver safe, sustainable, high quality and innovative solutions for users of waterways across the UK. “We look forward to forging a long-term relationship together and helping Canal & River Trust continue to make life better by water.” This will be the first time JN Bentley and the Canal & River Trust have worked together, and follows soon after JN Bentley’s appointment to frameworks with another new client, Associated British Ports, announced earlier this year.
