- Celebrating success and looking to the future in Wales
Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) colleagues enjoyed a week of celebrations alongside colleagues from Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water (DCWW), reflecting on our joint success during AMP7 (2020-2025) and looking ahead to the future of AMP8 (2025-2030). MMB office-based colleagues in Wales joined colleagues from DCWW for a full day session held at Cardiff City Football Club, whilst our site-based colleagues attended two half-day sessions at Swansea City Football Club and The Beaches Hotel. Hosted by a group of MMB’s Operations Managers, the events included a range of workshops covering key topics relevant to successful project delivery, such as service strike avoidance, setting and evaluating key performance indicators (KPIs), delivering commercial savings, and minimum viable solutions (MVS). The workshops involved an introductory talk from the two hosts in each, followed by quizzes and team activities. Topics such as health and safety were brought to life through real examples which encouraged colleagues to analyse risks and consider future learnings. With a huge variety of job roles and disciplines in attendance, the sessions invoked lots of discussion, opinions, and questions. Colleagues were then privileged to receive an inspirational talk from former Wales Rugby Captain, Ryan Jones. Ryan discussed his career, the qualities of a good leader and teammate, and the importance of teamwork both in sports and in the workplace. He spoke about the challenges he has faced both personally, including a diagnosis of early onset dementia, and professionally, in coping with major losses when playing rugby. He explained how we can learn from and overcome challenges we all face in life and at work if we have the right attitude and mentality. Ryan Jones, former Welsh Rugby Captain, speaking to the attendees about teamwork and attitude Colleagues from MMB and DCWW attending the celebration event MMB Director, Dan Buxton, commented: "It was fantastic to see everyone come together in person to reflect on our achievements and look ahead to what promises to be a busy and fulfilling AMP8. Last year, MMB were pleased to secure a new framework with DCWW that will see us deliver a variety of schemes across the region over the next eight years. We are looking forward to continuing to provide affordable, innovative solutions for our client and their customers and are fully committed to meeting the challenges facing the sector head-on through AMP8 and beyond." MMB’s presence in Wales has grown significantly since securing its first framework back in AMP6. It directly employs over 270 colleagues in the country across all roles, from frontline construction to design and management positions. It boasts strong links with local supply chains, which have been integral to the company’s growth allowing delivery of over £300m of work in the region since 2015.

Our teams based in the West Midlands - who are delivering water and wastewater schemes on our multi-million-pound frameworks with Severn Trent – attended the ceremony alongside a host of industry professionals to celebrate the very best in engineering and people across the region. The team were proud to receive the Education and Inspiration award for their efforts in driving STEM to support our long-held company tradition of investing in early careers. Our dedicated network of STEM ambassadors builds and maintains relationships with educational institutions across the country, promoting STEM values to young people and educating them about the career opportunities in construction and engineering. Last year, they collectively delivered over 1,000 hours of outreach – 360 of which were across the East and West Midlands region. This has included: Delivering a bridge building activity to secondary schools which takes students through a project from conception, detailed design and construction. The students are shown how engineers use computers to analyse forces on structures and are given the chance to use virtual reality (VR) headsets to explore the model of a bridge built by MMB. Visiting local primary schools to teach children about the water cycle, using our mascot 'Ellie the Engineer'. The students are also challenged to filter ‘sewage’ in teams with given materials to encourage their problem solving and teamwork skills. Supporting the roll-out of our skills bootcamp initiative, which provides free training and upskills those looking to get into construction. Attending university careers fairs to showcase the variety of career opportunities at MMB and within the wider industry. Volunteering with a Wolverhampton Scout group, helping them learn about sustainability in engineering and the importance of protecting nature during projects. Our Ecology and Sustainability team reclaimed waste materials from sites and used these to create bug houses with the Scouts. Partnering with The School Outreach Company, who connect us with local schools to maximise visibility of our business, so we can engage with under-represented students, deliver educational outreach, attend events, and provide STEM support. Above: MMB STEM ambassadors attend a local primary school to teach them about the water cycle, using our mascot 'Ellie the Engineer' We have also participated in the Engineering Development Trust’s (EDT) Gold projects for 13 years, and fostered lasting relationships with Highfields School, Wolverhampton, and Shrewsbury High School for Girls over this period. - Mott MacDonald Bentley supports local communities at Christmas
Over the festive period, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has actively engaged in charitable activities across its operational areas throughout the UK. Through our charitable giving, volunteering and community support activities, we aim to make a positive difference in communities where we operate. As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach to supporting society and charitable giving our efforts focus on offering our skills, time and expertise to community projects. MMB and United Utilities colleagues at Mossley Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), Bolton WwTW, and Chorley Better Rivers have raised the Christmas spirit this year for three local charities; enabling the project teams and some of our suppliers, to give something back to the communities in which they work. At Mossley and Bolton colleagues donated toys and raised just over £1,600 for two local children’s charities; charities who focus on supporting families and children who will receive very little this Christmas. The Better Rivers Chorley team supported their local foodbank by donated well needed items. Julie Sands, Liaison Coordinator said “This collective effort has brought positive cheer to all our sites and demonstrated a real spirit of giving.” In the North East, the team at Horsley donated their skills, time and expertise to make improvements to the local Women’s Institute Village Hall, as the uneven, all-gravelled drive was difficult for disabled residents to access. With the help of Premier Traffic Management and Northeast Site Services, the driveway was completed, and the team even gave the village hall a new coat of paint. JN Bentley colleagues have also proudly supported the Springwood assisted living apartments, in Shifnal, by laying paving slabs across three areas of the grounds, improving the area for both residents and staff, who were overjoyed with the results and expressed their gratitude with heartfelt praise and delicious cakes! In Worminghall, Buckinghamshire colleagues volunteered to upgrade a local village hall, which is the hub of the community and hosts many events and clubs, including a weekly Saturday coffee morning. The team spent two days tidying an overgrown area around the oil base tank, paving with recycled slabs to minimise ongoing garden maintenance, installing a handrail to an exterior ramp, and painting an exterior wall. In Leeds, the team has been busy collecting toy and gift donations for vulnerable and disadvantaged children through the Cash4Kids Mission Christmas appeal. Cash4Kids partners with front-line organisations like social services, schools, and grassroots community groups to directly help local children and young people. Around 150 gifts were generously donated by colleagues to be distributed to children across the region Well done and thank you to all our colleagues who have taken part in community initiatives, offering their skills, resources, and time to deliver better social outcomes and support our society.
