- JN Bentley makes carbon commitments
JN Bentley has committed to becoming net zero for all emissions by 2040. The company has also committed to becoming net zero for all scope 1 and 2 (direct) emissions by 2030. The commitments cover JN Bentley, Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley. The UK Government target is to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with the UK water sector committing to net zero operational emissions by 2030. With over 50% of UK carbon emissions sourced directly or indirectly from infrastructure, the time to act to reduce the impacts of climate change and protect the planet for future generations is now. There are six strands to the carbon approach. These steer the company’s route to net zero: 1. Leadership 2. Learning 3. Compliance with PAS 2080 4. Operationally Green 5. Low carbon solutions 6. Measures and targets The company is putting the finishing touches to its roadmap to 2040 and will share further details over the coming months. Acting now will protect the planet for future generations and help deliver improved value for clients as they too strive to achieve their own carbon goals. Whilst the task in hand requires great collective effort from stakeholders across industry, launching the carbon commitments is an important step for JN Bentley. Doing carbon ‘well’ will focus minds on innovation, collaboration and thinking that little bit differently – all things on which the organisation prides itself. Although today marks the launch of the commitments, work is already well underway towards achieving them. A number of projects can boast impressive low carbon credentials and a dedicated carbon working group is focusing on areas of the organisation that can make an immediate impact, including a constant review of the mix of vehicles on the company fleet, alternative fuels and office energy consumption. Keep across the company’s social media channels for examples of work already underway during the next week.

- Mott MacDonald Bentley colleagues support Engineering Education Scheme Wales project
A team of Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) colleagues took part in the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) Project again this year, partnering with 6th Form students to set them a real life engineering design task. Aimed at promoting STEM, the EESW project sees engineering businesses partner with a team of 6th Form students from local schools and colleges to set them a project brief related to a real problem facing the company. During the project, students research and design a solution to produce a final proposal, model or working prototype. Students then present their designs to a panel of assessors for a chance to win one of four awards for: Best Use of STEM, Best Written Proposal, Best Application of Engineering and Technology and Best Use of Mechanical Engineering Principles. MMB have been involved in the EESW project since 2016. This year, our team comprising of Prys Roberts, Prithula Roy Choudhury and Evan Lewis, partnered with two teams of 6th Form students from Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy and set them a project brief to design sustainable site cabins. Evan Lewis, one of MMB’s Civil Engineers supporting the project said: “The students were asked to develop methods of making an often repeated design such as the installation of a site set up more sustainable, an incentive aligned with the UKs move to carbon zero. This reinforced the critical role engineers have to play in the battle against climate change and illustrated an opportunity for how they might play their small part.” After an initial presentation at the school to set the brief, the students set out to investigate the problem and come up with different solutions – with the MMB team on hand to answer any queries throughout. Both student teams delivered great solutions by investigating the existing technology, coming up with innovative solutions and considering a wide range of impacts. Their efforts saw each receive an award – one for Best Use of STEM for Sustainability and the Environment and the other for Best Overall Written Report – aswell as a cash prize of £500, awarded at the EESW presentation day earlier this year. MMB’s involvement in the EESW project is not only a chance to promote STEM but provides a platform to showcase careers in engineering and the important role of engineers. Pictured: MMB at a previous STEM event “Through STEM activities, young people are educated on the important role engineers play in facilitating a healthy society whether being through the construction of critical infrastructure, the supply of clean drinking water or the treatment of waste. They also get to understand the potentially rewarding nature of the career through exposure to problem solving activities and seeing their designs evolve from an idea into being.” (Evan Lewis, Civil Engineer, MMB). Prys Roberts (Project Lead), part of the MMB team supporting the project said: “Being involved in STEM schemes, such as EESW, allows us to provide opportunities to the generation of future engineers to see a glimpse of what we do on a day-to-day. “Getting the students involved in a project to tackle and explore real issues is more engaging and gives a different perspective from sitting in a classroom, which we hope will ignite an interest in STEM subjects.” - Find out more about the EESW project here. - JBA Bentley celebrates 10th birthday
JBA Bentley is ten years old today! Founded on this day in 2013, the integrated design and build contractor brought together JBA Consulting – one of Europe’s leading specialists in environmental engineering and management, with national civil engineering contractor, JN Bentley. It was soon appointed to the Environment Agency’s Water and Environmental Management (WEM) framework. Working from offices in central Leeds, JBA Bentley began delivering a wide range of environmental and flood management schemes including environmental work, modelling, mapping, emergency planning, feasibility, detailed design and construction. The first scheme hit site in 2014. A second framework soon followed – the Asset Recovery Programme of Works (ARPW) - as did a second office, this time in Peterborough to support our activity in the east of England. 2015 saw JBA Bentley demonstrate its credentials as a trusted supplier to the EA by deploying teams over Christmas to support the recovery efforts following the devastating Boxing Day floods – the first of several instances that teams have since reacted at short notice to support our client. This also began our historic association with the Foss Barrier in York. After carrying out immediate recovery works, we went on to design and build award-winning permanent upgrades to better protect 2,000 properties in the city and make it more resilient to the impacts of climate change. It wasn’t all multi-million-pound projects: the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) framework saw JBA Bentley undertake smaller value schemes across the Midlands, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and East Anglia. We also secured a place on the Marine and Coastal (MCF) framework. Having now established itself, JBA Bentley’s focus evolved to start specialising in the safe and efficient delivery of low carbon solutions, placing sustainability at the forefront of its delivery. This was borne out in subsequent years through schemes including Bentley Ings Pumping Station – recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE); tidal defences in Great Yarmouth – a winner at the British Construction Industry Awards, and a flood alleviation scheme at South Ferriby – a Green Apple Award winner. Its client portfolio began to diversify, the Coal Authority and local authorities benefiting from JBA Bentley’s expertise in environmental engineering. This included a new mine water treatment scheme at Polkemmet in Scotland, and a new pumping station with Derby City Council, engineered to better project the city against flooding. In 2023, works are on-going on a host of exciting projects across the UK – none more so than the Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment Scheme. Here, new flood defences will create 275 hectares of intertidal and freshwater habitats provide food and habitat for a variety of bird species native to the Humber Estuary. Thank you to every colleague, client, supplier, and stakeholder that has contributed to the success of JBA Bentley over the last ten years – here’s to many more! Keep an eye on JBA Bentley's social feeds over the next two weeks as they celebrate ‘ten years in ten days’ through a series of posts looking at the very best of JBA Bentley. - Strategic Pipeline Alliance recognised for excellent digital delivery
Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance, along with their partners including Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), were announced as a finalist in the Digital Transformation category at the Utility Week Awards, held at Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair. The event was attended by UK water companies and other industry-leading utilities companies, with Anglian Water being announced as the winner of the flagship ‘Utility of the Year’ award. MMB and the other Alliance Partners represented the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA), one of the largest strategic water infrastructure projects in the UK. Taking a forward thinking and innovative approach, the ambitious project will create hundreds of kilometres of interconnecting mains and associated pumping equipment. The aim is to ensure the East Anglian region is resilient to the risk of drought by securing water supplies for future generations. The purpose of the Digital Transformation award is to recognise ‘outstanding leadership, ambition and success among utilities in embracing digital opportunities to transform their businesses and deliver better outcomes for customers.’ The Strategic Pipeline Alliance’s submission focused on the use of Geospatial Digital Solutions (GIS) at the heart of all decision making, specifically showcasing how SPA is using the Project 13 Principles to deliver better outcomes. Project 13 is an industry-led initiative that supports an enterprise led approach to the delivery of the UK’s national infrastructure programme. Built on five core principles, of which digital transformation is one, the approach prioritises customers and focuses on long-term social and economic value. GIS is a key component in the development of a Digital Twin for SPA, part of Anglian Water’s wider digital transformation plans. The Digital Twin will assist with asset management and connectivity, unlocking value by enabling improved insights that support better decisions. The Alliance’s use of GIS and Land Management technology (both powered by Moata) offers an innovative way of approaching land access for surveys, improving customer and client relationships. On the SPA project, so far over 10,000 surveys have been facilitated. Following the event, MMB’s Jon Gray, Design Manager working on the SPA project, commented: “We were very pleased to receive this high-level recognition at one of the utility industry’s biggest awards evenings. Our digital transformation strategy forms a core part of the successful delivery of SPA, showcasing the potential of this technology to the wider sector and delivering better outcomes for Anglian Water’s customers.
