Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Augmented reality We use the latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology in project design and delivery to help us better understand challenges on site, identify design or programme clashes early and improve the safety of the construction phase. Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of the real physical world that is achieved using digital visual elements, sound, or sensory stimuli delivered via technology. In terms of construction, it allows 3D digital models to be projected onto sites through a device, such as a tablet, phone, or headset. Case study: Project Munio We used Visual Live, an augmented reality tool, to visualise the position of construction elements and efficiently plan site works for Derby County Council. This helped the site team to better understand site constraints and plan the works safely as it was a very tight and complex site location. Case study: Grimsby On this scheme we used AR to visualise below ground services. Avoiding service strikes is critical when operating below ground, so having the ability to visualise services prior to digging makes avoidance much easier and improves excavation safety. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Preserving resources Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. We’ve supported innovative practices to drive low water commissioning techniques, which can support up to a 95% reduction in commissioning water usage. We follow the waste hierarchy, considering waste and resource management from the outset of project delivery to minimise waste and re-use, recycle and recover as much as possible. Our waste management target is to direct >95% of the waste we generate from landfill. We actively monitor energy consumption across our offices: all electricity used has been moved to green tariffs with REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certification. We are also certified against ISO 50001 for Energy Management for the design, construction and commissioning of building and civil, mechanical and electrical projects. Linton Falls Hydro We constructed a 120kW twin hydro turbine, on a small weir at Linton Falls on the River Wharf within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, bringing the asset back to life for the first time since 1948. Low Wood Hydro We installed two new Archimedean screw turbines as part of the refurbishment of the hydroelectric plant at the historic Low Wood Gunpowder Works within the scenic Lake District National Park. Tees Barrage We redeveloped this white water course to create a world-class training facility used in the 2012 Olympic Games. The project, at the time, was the only installation where Archimedean screws were used as both pumps and generators. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications JN Bentley constructed a 120kW hydro turbine, on land owned by the business on a small weir at Linton Falls on the River Wharf, near Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The original Linton Falls plant was built in 1909 bringing the first electricity to the village of Grassington, but was left out of commission since 1948, and has been protected as a Scheduled Monument. The construction project reinstated a hydro-electricity facility, incorporating two Archimedean screw turbines, to once again supply the Grassington area by feeding locally into the Grid. The works, which were on an English Heritage Scheduled Monument status site, required new intake sluice gates, the construction of an access bridge, the demolition of the existing power house and construction of a new power house, installation of rock armour and gabions to the tailrace and all preparatory work to allow the installation of the two new Archimedean screw turbines and associated equipment by Spaans Babcock. Low Wood Hydro The course is located on the River Tees adjacent to the Tees Barrage. The project comprised a redevelopment of the course to create a world-class white water facility. The project at the time was the only installation in the world where Archimedean screws were used as both pumps and generators. The screws were particularly large, delivering a maximum flow rate of 14m3/s. Further elements included the design and construction of the new RC pumping station, construction of associated penstocks, stop logs and a fish pass; raising of concrete channel walls; excavation and construction of a new, steeper ‘short course’. Tees Barrage As part of an overall upgrade to the treatment works at Esholt, we designed and managed the installation of two hydrodynamic screws. The hydropower installation utilises the 10m head drop between the inlet works and the new primary tanks, with the power generated assisting in meeting the base load of the new activated sludge secondary treatment plant. We were responsible for construction of the inlet chamber, and plinths for the 2.6m diameter screws and oversaw the subcontracted hydropower and electrical works. Esholt WwTW Working collaboratively with the client, we delivered a hydroelectric generation facility within Eccup Water Treatment Works (WTW), situated near Leeds, West Yorkshire. We also worked in partnership with suppliers to develop, install and commission a horizontally mounted Francis turbine with asynchronous generator in a new ‘hydro-turbine building’, upstream of Eccup WTW inlet works. The installation is fully integrated with the previously existing operation of the inlet works for ease of operation, to enable generation of up to 700MWh of electricity per annum. Eccup Hydro At Grmwith, water is released to river from the reservoir for abstraction downstream. Energy was being lost and offered an opportunity for energy recovery/generation from a turbine. 1970s JN Bentley was founded in 1972 and was principally involved in water and sewerage works. 1980s The 1980s saw JN Bentley become something of a pioneer in providing both design and build services to clients in-house. 1990s Together with a focus on civil engineering, the 1990s saw JN Bentley diversify its operations into the waste sector too. 2000s As MMB became more established, the 2000s saw geographical expansion as we built new office premises in Durham and secured a place on a new framework with Severn Trent Water. Present day JN Bentley joined the Mott MacDonald Group in 2014, building on 15 years of success through MMB. The first was at Linton, near Grassington in North Yorkshire and the other at Cowan Head, near Kendal in the Lake District. 1980s Like 1990s Like The 1990s saw a focus on civil engineering, through a strengthened relationship with Yorkshire Water and diversification into the waste sector. The geographic range of our activities was extended across the north of England, with a focus on blue chip and local government clients. We continued to develop expertise in design and construction, which in the water industry included process, mechanical and electrical design, installation and commissioning. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Our heritage The long-standing values that first made JN Bentley a success continue to be central to our business. JN Bentley was formed in 1972 by John Bentley. Since then the business has seen significant growth, delivering work across the building, civil engineering and environmental sectors for numerous clients across the UK. 2014 was a significant year for the business which culminated in Bentley Holdings Ltd (which includes its subsidiary company JN Bentley Ltd) being acquired by global engineering, management and development consultancy, Mott MacDonald, initiating an exciting new chapter for our business. The acquisition was a natural progression in the highly successful 15 year partnership between the companies through Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB), which has delivered over £1 billion worth of work since 1999. Here we highlight the organic growth of JN Bentley throughout the decades to the present day, where we have developed into a leading civil engineering company in the UK.
