  • Standout win for Mott MacDonald Bentley at industry awards

    Mott MacDonald Bentley's (MMB) Faringdon storage solutions scheme, delivered for Thames Water secured the 'UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £500K and £1M' Award at the annual Ground Engineering Awards. Delivered on behalf of Thames Water, Mott MacDonald Bentley’s Faringdon storage solutions scheme forms part of a wider programme to improve stormwater management and support future WINEP and Environment Agency requirements. The project involved the design and build of a new combined sewer overflow (CSO) and screening chamber, storm storage provision, a return pump station, and associated infrastructure. However, the original concept centred on a large open-cut excavation, which presented significant challenges due to complex ground conditions, environmental constraints and limited working space. Through early geotechnical assessment and detailed analysis, MMB identified substantial risks linked to slope stability, groundwater and proximity to protected woodland. In response, the team led a full design review, working closely with Thames Water and H&B Tunnelling to develop a more robust and sustainable solution. The adopted shaft solution significantly reduced the excavation footprint, minimised environmental impact and removed the need for complex temporary works, ultimately delivering a safer, more efficient and more buildable scheme. The judges highlighted the project’s “understanding of ground conditions and associated geotechnical risks”, while the use of a “three-dimensional ground model gave the team the foundation needed to challenge the initial design and deliver a more elegant and efficient engineering outcome." Dr Mark Edmondson, MMB’s regional discipline lead for geotechnics and ground engineering, added: “It is rewarding to see such positive feedback and clearly demonstrates the true value our integrated technical disciplines bring to delivering successful outcomes for our clients.” Commenting on the award win, Dan Buxton, director, said: “We’re really pleased to see the Faringdon scheme recognised at this year’s Ground Engineering Awards.   • Success for Mott MacDonald Bentley at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards

    The Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) team behind the Witches Oak Raw Water Abstraction and Wetlands scheme took home the Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Award at the annual ICE East Midlands Merit Awards, while design lead Tanya Donkin was named Regional STEM Ambassador of the Year. On behalf of Severn Trent, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has delivered a ground-breaking scheme at Witches Oak Raw Water Abstraction and Wetlands, bringing an abandoned water resource back into use to improve the resilience of drinking water supplies during future droughts. At a series of former gravel pit lakes near the River Trent, the project is increasing raw water supply through the recommissioning of infrastructure alongside innovative, low-carbon, nature-based solutions. MMB has delivered floating treatment wetlands across the lakes to act as the first stage of treatment, using natural biological processes to remove pollutants such as ammonia and suspended solids and reduce reliance on energy-intensive methods. Mimicking self-sustaining riparian habitats (those next to rivers or streams), the wetlands provide a resilient, low-maintenance solution while supporting biodiversity and habitat creation. As the first application of its kind at scale in the UK, Witches Oak demonstrates how nature-based solutions can be integrated into operational water infrastructure, showcasing how a low-carbon solution can directly improve water quality. Through close collaboration and community engagement, the scheme provides a sustainable, replicable model for enhancing ecosystems, improving resilience, and reducing reliance on traditional treatment methods. Commenting on the award, Declan Mawson, director said: “We’re incredibly proud to see the Witches Oak scheme recognised with this award. It’s a powerful demonstration of the vital role nature-based solutions can play in the future of water infrastructure – using innovative, low-carbon approaches to improve water quality, strengthen resilience, and enhance the natural environment. Through her extensive involvement in STEM outreach, from leading work experience programmes and supporting schools to engaging with communities and championing industry initiatives, she has made a significant impact across the region.     Meet one of our brilliant people: Monisha Alagesan, a project leader in the Midlands. Monisha speaks about her work on Mott MacDonald Bentley's (MMB) Severn Trent framework, delivering excellence on AMP8 UV schemes, and shares advice for anyone looking to shape their career at MMB. Tell us about your role and where you are based I'm project leader working mostly on our framework with Severn Trent. My focus is leading several AMP8 UV schemes in the region, having previously worked on a number of AMP7 UV schemes. My role is all about making sure key project deliverables on a project are met, for example mechanical, civil and electrical milestones. As well as working on the project specific health and safety files and ensuring procurement schedules are in order. How do you deliver excellence in your role? I deliver excellence on projects by aligning project goals with business priorities and stakeholder expectations. I maintain a transparent line of communication with key stakeholders, providing regular updates through a series of demonstrations and feedback loops - helping to build a sense of trust and transparency. Finally, I build a motivated project team, where roles were clearly defined and agile methods of working are promoted to keep momentum going. What advice would you give to someone looking to shape their own story at MMB? "Take pride in your work and own your impact." Excellence is recognised here, and initiative goes a long way. So, take every opportunity and make it a learning experience - while taking time to build strong, authentic connections across teams, as your network will be one of your greatest assets. Describe a moment when you learned something valuable from a colleague. During a complex project delivery, a colleague shared a simple but powerful approach to stakeholder engagement: listen more than you speak. By observing how they built trust through active listening and empathy, I learned technical excellence alone isn't enough - relationships and understanding are key to successful leadership. What opportunities have you had to grow your specialism or develop your career here? The support I've received whilst working towards my chartership. During this process, I was assigned a mentor to help me complete various requirements and provide the opportunity for support and collaboration throughout my chartership journey. What has been your proudest achievement? My proudest achievement is stepping into the water industry as a newcomer. My career journey has seen me working in the electrical sector in India for companies like Schneider and Hitachi, before taking a leap into the water sector when I moved across to the UK. I joined MMB and was given a great deal of trust and responsibility during the final stages of the AMP7 UV scheme, with a number of unresolved challenges which still required solutions. Despite the steep learning curve, I quickly analysed what was missing, collaborated with colleagues and re-engaged stakeholders, resulting in a successful project delivery. What advice would you give to your younger self? Be confident in your voice and your values. Don’t wait to be ready – step forward, take the lead, and trust that growth comes through experience. Collaboration and courage will shape your journey. What characteristic do you admire in other people? One characteristic I really admire is the ability to stay cool, calm and collected – even during a difficult or complex situation. I admire this as it shows a person can handle pressure and are willing to take a risk. How do you manage your safety and wellbeing? Through finding a work-life balance. To achieve this I step outside, explore new places and meet new people. Finish this sentence: I feel included when...   • Mott MacDonald Bentley supports green skills development in the East of England

    Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) is proud to have supported a brand-new Green Skills Academy, alongside other @one Alliance partners working with Anglian Water, to help build a long-term pipeline of talent equipped with practical environmental skills. Based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, the new training facility celebrated its formal opening in April. The £4.2m project has been funded in partnership by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority’s Recycled Growth Fund, Anglian Water and their 15 @one Alliance partners (of which MMB is one), and the College of West Anglia. The centre provides a space for local people keen to pursue a career in the environment, helping them develop key skills in water and resource efficiency, carbon reduction, renewable energy and environmental technologies. Designed with sustainability in mind, the building is powered by solar panels and includes rainwater harvesting technology to reduce water use. Not only will the Academy help bridge the construction skills gap in the UK, but it will support the critical transition to sustainable infrastructure needed to meet the country’s net zero targets. Training is now underway, with the first full cohort of learners set to start in September 2026. John Greenwood, operations director at MMB, commented: “As a key partner on Anglian Water’s @one Alliance and the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA), MMB is committed to supporting local skills development, and we are delighted to have invested in the new Green Skills Academy which will benefit many people in the years to come.   • Mott MacDonald Bentley delivers value for clients with standard products approach

    Mott MacDonald Bentley recently hosted a Quality, Cost and Efficiency (QC&E) Fortnight, bringing together teams from across the business to share how standard products are improving delivery for clients. The fortnight saw participation from colleagues across the business from support functions to project teams, to share examples of how standard products are already delivering benefits in quality, cost and efficiency. The sessions highlighted a clear, consistent message: when we design once and reuse well, we reduce complexity, improve safety, accelerate delivery and provide better value for our clients. Understanding standard products Standard products are pre-designed solutions that are ready to use across MMB projects and frameworks. They typically include approved drawings and calculations, and for some products, additional resources such as design guidance, installation instructions and programme information. MMB’s unique position in the regulated water market enables the business to bring engineers, procurement professionals, other support teams and the supply chain together to develop a growing library of standard products and embed them across project delivery. Standard products is one of MMB’s QC&E commitments, reflecting the role that standardisation plays in delivering speed, quality and value. With affordability one of the key challenges facing clients, utilising a growing suite of standard products is helping MMB deliver better value – reducing design time and shortening construction sequences to deliver quicker. Standardisation examples MMB’s use of standard products continues to grow. Progress in 2025 included the development of a prefabricated plastic draw pit chamber, alongside a parallel thermoset plastics option for clients who prefer this material. The product has been deployed across multiple clients including Thames Water, Northumbrian Water and Yorkshire Water. With many settlement tanks to deliver throughout AMP8, MMB has developed a product to standardise MMB’s procurement, design, construction and commissioning. The pre-cast concrete Sealwall tank – developed with Naylor Concrete Products – was deployed with the likes of Severn Trent and Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. MMB’s partnership with Naylor has seen the business obtain sample panels that are being used to train internal teams, ensuring ‘right first-time’ installation on site. This commitment to standardisation improves efficiency, boosts productivity and enhances site safety – helping to deliver better outcomes for both project delivery teams and clients.   • JN Bentley enters into agreement to acquire Australian contractor, Leed Engineering & Construction

    JN Bentley, the UK contracting arm of the global employee-owned engineering consultancy, Mott MacDonald Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Leed Engineering & Construction, a privately owned civil contractor delivering projects in metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Australia. Leed is a multi-disciplinary engineering and construction company, specialising in complex infrastructure projects. Founded in 2001, the business has grown rapidly to become a national infrastructure contractor with a team of over 350 people and offices in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales. The company has extensive civil construction experience across water, dams, environmental works, roads, bridges and general earthworks as well as related engineering, construction methodology, planning and design. Paul Bentley, JN Bentley managing director said: “Leed has built an impressive reputation across Australia for delivering high quality, technically challenging projects, and their expertise is well aligned with our own commitment to safe, reliable and innovative delivery.   • Mott MacDonald Bentley confirmed as partner for new Scottish Water enterprise

    Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has been confirmed as a partner for a new joint enterprise with Scottish Water that will transform the country’s water and wastewater infrastructure. Seven companies will collaborate with Scottish Water on the joint enterprise, which represents the biggest ever programme of investment for the publicly-owned utility company. Set to enhance Scotland’s water and waste water assets over the period from 2027 to 2033, the enterprise will help preserve the nation’s world-class water quality, protect the environment, and ensure services continue to meet the needs of the utility’s customers. The initial six-year delivery period of the joint-enterprise is part of a proposed £8bn investment outlined in the recently published 2027-33 Business Plan. Ian Bester, operations director at MMB, commented: “We’re delighted to be confirmed as a partner on this important new enterprise with Scottish Water. "Drawing on more than 25 years of experience, we will play a key role in supporting Scottish Water’s ambition to enhance and protect vital public assets, ensuring resilient water services and a healthier environment.     JN Bentley has published its 2025 annual review. The review looks back on the last 12 months in JN Bentley and its fully-integrated design and build companies, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley. The review reflects on what was another positive period for the organisation – and its busiest ever – with a record £600m in revenue delivered with clients across the UK. The business welcomed new people and clients and made real progress where it matters most: health and safety. The launch of the company’s control of high energy hazards programme, alongside continued investment in new technology, is helping to make sites safer places to work – taking the business to a place where zero injuries will be a reality.   • Mott MacDonald Bentley wins highly competitive award for pioneering nature-based project

    The Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) project team responsible for delivering the UK's largest integrated constructed wetland (ICW) proudly took home the Centenary Award for projects valued over £5m, at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Yorkshire and Humber Awards. On behalf of Yorkshire Water, and working in partnership with Stantec, the pioneering 'first-of-its-size' scheme at Dearne Reach, Yorkshire, is now a benchmark for delivering low-carbon, nature-based solutions to support stormwater management and deliver water quality improvements. MMB designed and built thirteen adjacent wetland cells - housing over 350,000 plants of 52 different species - engineered to naturally treat effluent to improve 4km of the River Dearne. Using natural processes such as sedimentation, filtration and biological uptake, the ICW removes pollutants including ammonia, biological oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids. The solution is a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete infrastructure - which would have entailed 7,000 m³ of storm storage - and is creating many new thriving habitats. As the largest ICW of its kind in the country, Dearne Reach showcases the capability of the UK construction industry to deliver low-carbon, climate-resilient infrastructure at scale. Lessons learned from both design and delivery are already being shared across the industry, helping to drive continuous improvement and innovation in sustainable water management. In doing so, the project not only improves river water quality and biodiversity today but also strengthens the evidence base and confidence needed to accelerate adoption of nature-based solutions nationwide. Commenting on why the project deserved the award, the ICE judges said: "The Dearne Reach scheme is an exemplar for using nature-based solutions to respond to water challenges while delivering enhanced biodiversity and catchment-wide water quality benefits.” The judges were further impressed by the project’s use of digital tools and AI to optimise how the earthworks were managed, congratulating the team for their commitment to excellence every step of the way, from feasibility through to construction.
