Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) celebrated a successful night at the Civil Engineering Contractor’s Association (CECA) Yorkshire and Humber Awards, winning Project of the Year over £10m and Most Promising Apprentice.

Project success

Delivered in partnership with Yorkshire Water, the £15m upgrades to Killinghall Sewage Treatment Works has increased treatment capacity and improved water quality in the region, while introducing innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of construction.

Central to the scheme was a first-of-its-kind 3D printed water-retaining structure, which delivered a 53% carbon saving compared with the conventional alternative, while supporting a leaner, more sustainable construction process.

The wider Killinghall scheme has also incorporated a nature-based aerated reed bed alongside new inlet, settlement and sludge-handling infrastructure, helping to improve phosphorus removal and increase treatment capacity.

Commenting on the project's success, Andrew Tindall, operations manager at MMB said:  “This award is thoroughly deserved recognition for the whole Killinghall team. Working closely with Yorkshire Water and their SPP, they challenged conventional thinking and used digital rehearsal to reduce delivery risk against an already very tight programme. Alongside the first-of-its-kind 3D-printed structure and nature-based treatment solutions, this demonstrates what genuine collaboration and innovation can achieve.”

Recognising rising talent

Meanwhile, apprentice civil engineer at MMB, Hallie Fitton, was named Most Promising Apprentice, with judges recognising her ownership of the civil engineering design for the Muker Sewage Treatment Works project alongside her studies.

Reflecting on her award win, Hallie said: “I’m really proud to have received the Most Promising Apprentice award. My apprenticeship at MMB has given me the opportunity to take on real responsibility while continuing to develop my technical knowledge and learn from experienced colleagues across the business.”

Elsewhere on the night, the Burnley Road Pipe Bridge Replacement scheme – delivered by MMB for Yorkshire Water, was shortlisted in the Project of the Year £3m-£10m category.

These successes add to a growing list of industry recognition for MMB projects and colleagues, highlighting the company’s investment in engineering innovation, sustainable delivery and future talent across the business.
