JN Bentley pioneers solid waste solutions for a sustainable future. Explore our innovative approaches to waste management and environmental stewardship Yorwaste We have a long-standing relationship with Yorwaste which dates back to the 1990s, which included the construction of a new leachate treatment plant. Bradford Metropolitan District Council We have carried out a number of household waste recycling centres across the Bradford district, both as new build projects and as extension or refurbishment schemes. Waste Recycling Group Our work with the Waste Recycling Group has seen us construct waste cells, undertake capping works and deliver infrastructure schemes across Yorkshire, East Midlands and the North East. The scope of the works for the project comprised of the construction of nearly 2.5km of 125mm sewer running from Skibeden Landfill Site to the foulwater manhole in Regent Road, Skipton. Laid in the verge of a major highway, road crossings were constructed, together with access points and connections into existing sewer infrastructure. Yorwaste Our work with Waste Recycling Group has seen us deliver landfill facilities across the Yorkshire, East Midlands and North East regions, constructing waste cells, capping works and infrastructure schemes. Our landfill works involved hundreds of thousands of tonnes of bulk earthmoving. For example, at Welbeck Landfill Site, located in West Yorkshire, the site was the subject of sand and gravel workings and subsequent overfilling with colliery spoil from Sharlston Colliery and the Selby Coalfield, so JN Bentley was engaged to construct three new cells. The work was completed by means of cut/fill of materials to specified formation levels, and installation of a composite lining system. Waste Recycling Group We undertook compound works at Path Head Landfill Site to allow SITA UK to open the new 5million m3 capacity facility in accordance with their operational needs for waste void space. The project was delivered as part of an Alliance framework agreement with SITA UK in the North-East of England. The brief was to design and construct the compound infrastructure to facilitate the operation of the site and satisfy all regulatory requirements including PPC, Planning and Building Regulations. We utilised recycled stone in gabions used in retaining walls, and provided a new ecological habitat for Sandmartins and Dingy Skipper Butterfly, in liaison with the county ecologist. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Preserving resources Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. We’ve supported innovative practices to drive low water commissioning techniques, which can support up to a 95% reduction in commissioning water usage. We follow the waste hierarchy, considering waste and resource management from the outset of project delivery to minimise waste and re-use, recycle and recover as much as possible. Our waste management target is to direct >95% of the waste we generate from landfill. We continue to seek efficiencies in our operations and are seeing benefits from standardised site setups that use cabins with improved EPC ratings; the use of battery storage units on site; and the introduction of Stage V engines in our plant fleet. We actively monitor energy consumption across offices: the majority of electricity used here has been moved to green tariffs with REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certification. We are also certified against ISO 50001 for Energy Management for the design, construction and commissioning of building and civil, mechanical and electrical projects. • Highways | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley

Navigate the future with JN Bentley's highways solutions. We drive innovation in infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient road networks North Wales Trunk Road Under a framework for North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency we deliver works such as the installation of noise mitigation and vehicle restraint barriers, like these pictured on the A55. Rampside Sea Wall In the North West of England we renewed the current sea wall by placing new rock armour wall to ensure it provided protection to the coast for years to come. Baitings Gate Bridge This project at Baitings Reservoir saw us marry our knowledge of the water industry with our highways expertise. We replaced the 105m bridge deck and constructed new bearings. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Baitings Gate Bridge, which crosses the upstream end of Baitings Impounding Reservoir near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, required significant structural alterations. The brief for the project included the removal of the existing bridge deck structure, refurbishment of the pier heads where required, and construction of a new deck and bearings, designed and constructed to modern bridge standards. Operational constraints on water level led the team to propose a barge and crane arrangement (both in demolition and construction). The project utilised pre-cast concrete products and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to ensure efficient delivery. Baitings Gate Bridge Our first project with North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency was located on the eastbound slip road of the A55 North Wales Coast Road, near St Asaph. The project consisted of the installation of 115m of 2.5m-high noise mitigation barriers to reduce the noise levels heard by nearby residents. The second project was also located on the A55 Holyhead to South of Chester Trunk Road between Junctions 27 and 27a near St Asaph. The scope here consisted of replacing nearly 850m of vehicle restraint barriers in the central reservation. Rampside Seawall To facilitate the training of their linesmen, National Grid proposed the construction of a new training overhead line at their training facility at Eakring, Nottinghamshire. The proposal comprised eight new T-Pylon test structures. The line spans approximately 1km over undulating land, which had previously been used for agricultural purposes. In order for this work to be undertaken and for the future maintenance and testing works, enabling works were required, including the provision of access tracks to each pylon locations. Explore JN Bentley's commitment to renewables. Driving innovation in sustainable energy solutions for a greener future Linton Falls Hydro We constructed a 120kW twin hydro turbine, on a small weir at Linton Falls on the River Wharf within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, bringing the asset back to life for the first time since 1948. Low Wood Hydro We installed two new Archimedean screw turbines as part of the refurbishment of the hydroelectric plant at the historic Low Wood Gunpowder Works within the scenic Lake District National Park. Tees Barrage We redeveloped this white water course to create a world-class training facility used in the 2012 Olympic Games. The project, at the time, was the only installation where Archimedean screws were used as both pumps and generators. The project at the time was the only installation in the world where Archimedean screws were used as both pumps and generators. The screws were particularly large, delivering a maximum flow rate of 14m3/s. Further elements included the design and construction of the new RC pumping station, construction of associated penstocks, stop logs and a fish pass; raising of concrete channel walls; excavation and construction of a new, steeper ‘short course’. Tees Barrage As part of an overall upgrade to the treatment works at Esholt, we designed and managed the installation of two hydrodynamic screws. The hydropower installation utilises the 10m head drop between the inlet works and the new primary tanks, with the power generated assisting in meeting the base load of the new activated sludge secondary treatment plant.
