  • JN Bentley supply chain delivers early success in control of high energy hazard programme

Following a safety engagement programme launched earlier this year, JN Bentley is seeing strong early progress in embedding high energy hazard controls across its key partners. Since February, 56 key supply chain partners, including material and plant manufacturers, plant hire providers and subcontractors, have committed to adopting the management and control of high energy hazards into their day-to-day practices, in line with JN Bentley’s latest safety standards. 75% of our supply chain have engaged with our control of high energy hazards programme, with two thirds of suppliers already embedding these principles within their own organisations to strengthen how high-risk activities are managed across JN Bentley’s operations. The high energy hazards programme focuses on identifying and controlling the most significant risks in construction and our supply chain’s manufacturing environments, particularly those with the potential to cause serious injury. By extending this approach across its partners, JN Bentley is improving how risks are identified, understood and controlled at source, creating greater consistency across all areas of delivery. Through regular collaboration, workshops and structured reviews, JN Bentley has worked alongside its supply chain partners to embed the approach and identify practical improvements. This is already leading to tangible changes across our supply chain’s plant and site delivery. Suppliers are introducing direct and secondary controls into production environments, improving transport and delivery processes, and reducing exposure to high-risk activities through design and innovation. Across the network, organisations are also sharing learnings and applying best practice more widely, from safer lifting and handling solutions to engineering controls and automation that reduce interaction with high-risk tasks. Speaking on the progress made, Dean Holmes, JN Bentley director, commented: "It's really encouraging to see the progress being made across our supply chain. Beyond the numbers, we're seeing suppliers challenge traditional ways of working, introduce innovative controls and share learning across organisations. That collaborative approach is creating safer environments for everyone involved in delivering our projects." "As we continue to build momentum, it is important that all suppliers embrace this approach. A strong commitment to managing high energy hazards will increasingly form part of how we assess and select partners in the future. By working with suppliers to control high energy hazards at source, we are helping to reduce exposure to serious risks before work reaches site, supporting safer outcomes across projects and suppliers manufacturing operations." This early momentum highlights a growing, collective focus on improving safety across JN Bentley's supply chain. Increased engagement, combined with practical improvements and collaboration, is helping to build a more consistent and proactive approach across both supplier production environments and site operations. With regular touchpoints in place to maintain progress, the next phase will focus on developing controls further, sharing innovation and recognising suppliers driving positive change, ensuring this approach remains central to managing risks across the business. The wider focus on supplier engagement, collaboration and risk management has also been recognised externally, with JN Bentley's procurement team shortlisted as finalists at the 2026 World Procurement Awards. ________________________________________________________________________________ Read more on JN Bentley's control of high energy hazards programme in their latest annual review.

What advice would you give to someone looking to shape their own story at JN Bentley? Work hard and take responsibility when the opportunity arises – people will notice your success. Describe life at JN Bentley in three words. Future, opportunity and safety. Describe a moment when you learned something valuable from a colleague. One thing that has stuck with me throughout my time at JN Bentley is that “communication is key”. No matter the job, you need to communicate with your team to ensure success. What opportunities have you had to grow your specialism or develop your career at JN Bentley? Whilst at JN Bentley, I’ve had a number of opportunities to develop, mainly through industry training courses including earning my crane tickets, lifting certificates and additional training such as how to operate a CAT and Genny. What advice would you give to your younger self? Be strong, be positive – sometimes things go wrong but you have to carry a positive attitude into your work, to pick yourself up and learn from the experience. What has been your proudest achievement? My family. They have been with me every step of my career journey, from starting out in my home country of Romania, moving to Italy, France then working in the UK. They have been there all along the way to support me. What hidden talent do you have? My hidden talent is learning and speaking languages. I learn fast and speak English, Romanian, Russian and Italian. The trick to learning is watching films with subtitles of the language you want to learn, as I found you can pick up a language quickly that way. Do you have a mantra you live by or that motivates you? If so, what is it? My mantra is “keep going until you’re proud”. Finish this sentence: I feel included when… I’m appreciated and my voice is heard. __________________________________________________________________________________ Interested in a career at JN Bentley? • Standout win for Mott MacDonald Bentley at industry awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley's (MMB) Faringdon storage solutions scheme, delivered for Thames Water secured the 'UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £500K and £1M' Award at the annual Ground Engineering Awards. Delivered on behalf of Thames Water, Mott MacDonald Bentley’s Faringdon storage solutions scheme forms part of a wider programme to improve stormwater management and support future WINEP and Environment Agency requirements. The project involved the design and build of a new combined sewer overflow (CSO) and screening chamber, storm storage provision, a return pump station, and associated infrastructure. However, the original concept centred on a large open-cut excavation, which presented significant challenges due to complex ground conditions, environmental constraints and limited working space. Through early geotechnical assessment and detailed analysis, MMB identified substantial risks linked to slope stability, groundwater and proximity to protected woodland. In response, the team led a full design review, working closely with Thames Water and H&B Tunnelling to develop a more robust and sustainable solution. The adopted shaft solution significantly reduced the excavation footprint, minimised environmental impact and removed the need for complex temporary works, ultimately delivering a safer, more efficient and more buildable scheme. The judges highlighted the project’s “understanding of ground conditions and associated geotechnical risks”, while the use of a “three-dimensional ground model gave the team the foundation needed to challenge the initial design and deliver a more elegant and efficient engineering outcome." Dr Mark Edmondson, MMB’s regional discipline lead for geotechnics and ground engineering, added: “It is rewarding to see such positive feedback and clearly demonstrates the true value our integrated technical disciplines bring to delivering successful outcomes for our clients.” Commenting on the award win, Dan Buxton, director, said: “We’re really pleased to see the Faringdon scheme recognised at this year’s Ground Engineering Awards. It’s a great example of how early geotechnical insight and collaboration can drive better, safer and more sustainable outcomes for our clients.” MMB was well represented across the awards, with the Cleobury Mortimer STW AMP7 replacements works, delivered in partnership with Severn Trent being highly commended by the judges in the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1M and £3M category’. Whilst the project team for Springwell Enhancements, delivered in collaboration with Northumbrian Water, was also shortlisted in the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £3M and £10M' category. __________________________________________________________________________________ Find out more about our award-winning projects in our latest annual review.

  • Success for Mott MacDonald Bentley at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards

The Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) team behind the Witches Oak Raw Water Abstraction and Wetlands scheme took home the Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Award at the annual ICE East Midlands Merit Awards, while design lead Tanya Donkin was named Regional STEM Ambassador of the Year. On behalf of Severn Trent, Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has delivered a ground-breaking scheme at Witches Oak Raw Water Abstraction and Wetlands, bringing an abandoned water resource back into use to improve the resilience of drinking water supplies during future droughts. At a series of former gravel pit lakes near the River Trent, the project is increasing raw water supply through the recommissioning of infrastructure alongside innovative, low-carbon, nature-based solutions. MMB has delivered floating treatment wetlands across the lakes to act as the first stage of treatment, using natural biological processes to remove pollutants such as ammonia and suspended solids and reduce reliance on energy-intensive methods. Mimicking self-sustaining riparian habitats (those next to rivers or streams), the wetlands provide a resilient, low-maintenance solution while supporting biodiversity and habitat creation. As the first application of its kind at scale in the UK, Witches Oak demonstrates how nature-based solutions can be integrated into operational water infrastructure, showcasing how a low-carbon solution can directly improve water quality. Through close collaboration and community engagement, the scheme provides a sustainable, replicable model for enhancing ecosystems, improving resilience, and reducing reliance on traditional treatment methods. Commenting on the award, Declan Mawson, director said: “We’re incredibly proud to see the Witches Oak scheme recognised with this award. It’s a powerful demonstration of the vital role nature-based solutions can play in the future of water infrastructure – using innovative, low-carbon approaches to improve water quality, strengthen resilience, and enhance the natural environment. The project is a real testament to the collaboration and expertise across the Severn Trent and MMB team.” Alongside project success, MMB design lead Tanya Donkin was recognised as Regional STEM Ambassador of the Year for her outstanding commitment to inspiring the next generation of engineers. Through her extensive involvement in STEM outreach, from leading work experience programmes and supporting schools to engaging with communities and championing industry initiatives, she has made a significant impact across the region. Reflecting on her award, she said: “I’ve always been passionate about civil engineering, which is why I enjoy taking part in STEM and work experience events to inspire others. It’s such a varied field, but at its core it’s about solving problems, making a difference, and benefiting society.” Well done to all the winners and finalists. __________________________________________________________________________________ Read more about our nature-based solution at Witches Oak Green Recovery
