Mott MacDonald Bentley wins prestigious ICE award
A project delivering major upgrades to Wales’ largest reservoir has been named winner of the prestigious George Gibby Award at the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Awards in Wales.
Delivered by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water in partnership with Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and Natural Resources Wales, the project to upgrade Llyn Celyn Reservoir has improved the long-term safety and resilience of the area, while protecting the surrounding Eryri National Park.

The £30 million scheme introduced one of the UK’s most advanced spillway systems, centred on the country’s largest reinforced concrete tipping gates. The design combines hydraulic innovation, rigorous modelling and digital engineering to optimise performance while reducing carbon, cost and landscape impact.
Construction excellence was achieved through complex geotechnical works, a 70° soil‑nailed excavation, efficient concrete delivery and a robust dam safety management plan.
Furthermore, the project was delivered with strong stakeholder collaboration, environmental sensitivity and community engagement.
Llyn Celyn now stands as a benchmark for modern reservoir safety, sustainability and engineering ambition.
Michael McAree, design manager at MMB, said: "We are delighted that the Llyn Celyn project has received this recognition. Its success reflects the strength of our partnership with Welsh Water, the ingenuity of our engineering teams and our shared commitment to delivering safe and sustainable infrastructure."
Stephen Shakespeare, Welsh Water’s dam safety manager, said: "Winning this award is a proud moment for everyone involved in the Llyn Celyn project and recognises the skill, commitment and collaboration behind this important work.
“What makes this project particularly special is that it combines engineering excellence with environmental stewardship. Through innovation, sustainable design and close partnership working, we have delivered a major safety enhancement while respecting the unique landscape of Eryri National Park. We are incredibly proud that this achievement has been recognised by ICE Wales Cymru.”
The ICE Wales Cymru Awards recognise exceptional projects, teamwork and individual excellence. The award adds to a growing list of industry recognition for the Llyn Celyn project, which has also won Water Project of the Year at the British Construction and Infrastructure Awards, Project of the Year from CECA North West and Best Use of Design Software at the GeoTech Awards.
