  • Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley named finalists at British Construction Industry Awards

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) and JBA Bentley are proud to have been shortlisted seven times at the 2023 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA). Being named as finalists across the categories demonstrates the variety of work we deliver and recognises the efforts of all those involved, including our people, clients, and partners. Upon being shortlisted, director Steve Tetlow, said, “We are pleased to have been named as finalists in the British Construction Industry Awards again this year. The awards are the most prestigious in our sector and recognise real engineering and construction excellence. “Awards are important because they not only provide external validation for the quality of projects we are delivering with our clients, but they recognise the hard work of our talented teams and suppliers too. “Well done to everyone involved.” Shortlisted projects: Embsay Water Treatment Works – MMB - Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and Utility Project of the Year Our project at Embsay for Yorkshire Water addressed several improvements to secure a resilient and reliable supply of clean water, and ensured these solutions were affordable by implementing value engineering based upon PAS2080 design principles – most notably, ‘Build Less’. We identified an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint by eliminating the need to build new manganese filters, after Moata Carbon Portal showed that over half of the project’s carbon footprint would be in their construction. Yorkshire Water had previously used catchment-based solutions to address raw water quality and reduce manganese levels. We proposed that process changes to existing plant, rather than constructing new filters, could deliver the same treated water quality parameters. Our solution reduced operating carbon by 130 tonnes of CO2e annually. Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) – MMB – Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and Product Innovation of the Year MMB is a partner on SPA - one of the largest strategic water infrastructure projects in the UK. Taking a forward thinking and innovative approach, the ambitious project is creating hundreds of kilometres of interconnecting mains and associated pumping equipment, to ensure the region is resilient to the risk of drought by securing water supplies for future generations. The entire pipeline has been designed to have the lowest carbon footprint possible, in line with Anglian Water’s pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2030. The project has innovation at its heart, unlocking efficiencies at every stage. MMB trialled and proved the validity of a ‘low water’ approach to commissioning that uses air to drive slugs of water between swabs to clean and disinfect the pipes. Traditional commissioning would have required over 1bn litres of water on SPA. Our approach cut this by approximately 95%. You can read all about SPA at Water Projects Online. Great Yarmouth Tidal Defences – JBA Bentley - Temporary Works Initiative of the Year One of JBA Bentley’s largest projects for the Environment Agency, the £42.9m flood defence scheme has now reached stage 2 completion and will provide better protection to 4,500 homes and business in Great Yarmouth. Without the development of an innovative temporary works solution to facilitate the major quayside flood defence improvement works, Victorian-era Grist Mill would not have been saved. Tasked with using two 300T cranes working in tandem to feed piles to the waterfront, re-usable steel crane pads meant that the operation could take place within a challenging site constrained in size, sitting on a plethora of buried services and surrounded by residents and businesses. The approach made the project viable and at the same time eliminated 9,000 tonnes of stone from the temporary works solution, and reduced carbon by 78%. Read more about the project in this Environment Agency article published on the Government website. Mill Fleam Pumping Station (Project MUNIO) – JBA Bentley – Environmental Project of the Year The £8m scheme – which recently won Medium Project of the Year at the ICE East Midlands Merit Awards - is a key piece of flood defence infrastructure, providing heightened protection in Derby city centre during heavy rainfall, an area that has suffered historic river and surface water flooding. Several innovations helped overcome space and time constraints, including 3D and augmented reality to improve resource use and safety; off-site and factory manufactured products reducing site-time and enhancing quality; and collaborative design, commissioning, construction and client teams, ensuring the right solution at the right time. Embodied carbon was monitored and removed, and environmental enhancements implemented, as well as ecological management to reduce disturbance to local bat species. Bradford Beck Culvert Remediation Scheme – JBA Bentley - Upgrade and Renewal Project of the Year An excellent example of the benefits of early contractor involvement, this scheme saw JBA Bentley carry out urgent repairs to the cast iron beams spanning the culvert underneath the former Bradford Odeon cinema, to maintain the structural integrity of the building ahead of major renovations. The solution delivered significant cost savings compared with alternative solutions and meant works to transform the venue were not delayed. - Colleagues will present to BCIA judges in September before the winners are announced at a ceremony in October. • Success for JBA Bentley at Institution of Civil Engineers Awards East Midlands Merit Awards

JBA Bentley’s project at Mill Fleam Pumping Station in Derby was named Medium Project of the Year at the 2023 Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) East Midlands Merit Awards (EMMAs). The EMMAs celebrate individual and project achievements, recognising the best engineering projects, outstanding individual contributions and innovation across the industry. Mill Fleam Pumping Station (Project Munio) – an £8m scheme for Derby City Council – is a key piece of flood defence infrastructure, providing heightened protection in Derby city centre during heavy rainfall, an area that has suffered historic river and surface water flooding. The scheme was the final phase of Project Munio – a key phase of work to reduce flood risk along the west bank of the River Derwent, and future proof the city against the effects of climate change. Works on site involved the installation of large hydraulic lock gates, sheet piled river walls, a fish refuge area and a new pumping station capable of passing forward flows of 4,500 litres per second. The judges highlighted that ‘the project demonstrated benefits of utilising new technologies and collaboration software.’ Due to space and time constraints, several innovations were implemented on the scheme to meet these challenges, including 3D and augmented reality to improve resource use and safety; off-site and factory manufactured products reducing site-time and enhancing quality; and collaborative design, commissioning, construction and client teams, ensuring the right solution at the right time. Nick Lister, Operations Director said: “It’s fantastic to see the project recognised by the ICE. The new pumping station will play an important role in reducing flood risk in the city. “I know how hard the team have worked to successfully deliver the works – many people thought the programme was unachievable, but the team showed what can be delivered when they come together and operate as one – utilising digital in project delivery to improve safety, drive efficiency and Innovation and aid collaboration. Congratulations and well done all.” - Learn more about The EMMAs here. Don’t forget to follow JBA Bentley on LinkedIn and Twitter to stay up to date with the latest news from across the business.

  • JN Bentley supports Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

JN Bentley has supported the Mental Health Foundation’s annual Mental Health Awareness Week, which this year focused on an important theme many can relate to: anxiety. Talking about mental health isn’t always easy, but just one conversation has the power to change lives. Colleagues at JN Bentley are regularly encouraged to take a Wellbeing Moment during team meetings to discuss important wellbeing topics, alongside a reminder of the support offered by the company, including a partnership with Able Futures and an Employee Assistance Programme, as well as a network of wellbeing champions and Mental Health First Aiders who are there to provide confidential support. This has also seen a number of colleagues sharing their personal stories and experiences with mental health, to powerful effect. Across offices and sites, throughout the week colleagues took part in initiatives and activities to support the campaign and raise awareness. In Leeds, employees enjoyed a coffee and cake morning, before taking part in a relaxing meditation session at a nearby park square. Office Manager, Katy, commented: "It was lovely - such a great atmosphere. The circle just got bigger and bigger as more people joined!". The office sports and social committee also organised pottery painting as the social event of the month and a meditation session at lunchtime. Everyone can play their part in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, and campaigns such as this highlight the importance of building supportive environments and having open conversations. • JBA Bentley celebrates 10th birthday

JBA Bentley is ten years old today! Founded on this day in 2013, the integrated design and build contractor brought together JBA Consulting – one of Europe’s leading specialists in environmental engineering and management, with national civil engineering contractor, JN Bentley. It was soon appointed to the Environment Agency’s Water and Environmental Management (WEM) framework. Working from offices in central Leeds, JBA Bentley began delivering a wide range of environmental and flood management schemes including environmental work, modelling, mapping, emergency planning, feasibility, detailed design and construction. The first scheme hit site in 2014. A second framework soon followed – the Asset Recovery Programme of Works (ARPW) - as did a second office, this time in Peterborough to support our activity in the east of England. 2015 saw JBA Bentley demonstrate its credentials as a trusted supplier to the EA by deploying teams over Christmas to support the recovery efforts following the devastating Boxing Day floods – the first of several instances that teams have since reacted at short notice to support our client. This also began our historic association with the Foss Barrier in York. After carrying out immediate recovery works, we went on to design and build award-winning permanent upgrades to better protect 2,000 properties in the city and make it more resilient to the impacts of climate change. It wasn’t all multi-million-pound projects: the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) framework saw JBA Bentley undertake smaller value schemes across the Midlands, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and East Anglia. We also secured a place on the Marine and Coastal (MCF) framework. Having now established itself, JBA Bentley’s focus evolved to start specialising in the safe and efficient delivery of low carbon solutions, placing sustainability at the forefront of its delivery. This was borne out in subsequent years through schemes including Bentley Ings Pumping Station – recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE); tidal defences in Great Yarmouth – a winner at the British Construction Industry Awards, and a flood alleviation scheme at South Ferriby – a Green Apple Award winner. Its client portfolio began to diversify, the Coal Authority and local authorities benefiting from JBA Bentley’s expertise in environmental engineering. This included a new mine water treatment scheme at Polkemmet in Scotland, and a new pumping station with Derby City Council, engineered to better project the city against flooding. In 2023, works are on-going on a host of exciting projects across the UK – none more so than the Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment Scheme. Here, new flood defences will create 275 hectares of intertidal and freshwater habitats provide food and habitat for a variety of bird species native to the Humber Estuary. Thank you to every colleague, client, supplier, and stakeholder that has contributed to the success of JBA Bentley over the last ten years – here’s to many more! Keep an eye on JBA Bentley's social feeds over the next two weeks as they celebrate ‘ten years in ten days’ through a series of posts looking at the very best of JBA Bentley. • Mott MacDonald Bentley educates children on site safety

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has hosted a construction safety assembly with pupils at a school close to a new project in the North-East. With Springwell Village Primary School located nearby to where MMB have been appointed by Northumbrian Water to help build a new £50m+ underground reservoir, the site team recognised the need to engage and educate the local children about the importance of site safety. They considered that many children might not have been exposed to construction sites and delivering an interactive presentation could help to educate them about the dangers. The presentation was given to the entire school, where the team explained their role in construction and emphasised their commitment to keeping the community safe and the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety training. They also engaged the children with a ‘spot the hazards’ activity and asked questions throughout, sparking participation. The team then developed a creative competition for the pupils to design site safety posters; the winning poster from each year group would be displayed on site for all to see. The children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and took the opportunity to ask questions too. The school thanked MMB for the assembly, and the team were pleased to have left the children with a better understanding of site safety and to have established a positive relationship with the community. As schools are often at the heart of many communities, educational visits are important in helping us to promote STEM and engage with local stakeholders so that they understand the purpose of the schemes we’re delivering, ensuring that we leave a positive legacy in our operational areas. An MMB Site Agent recently gave a similar assembly presentation about PPE to over 90 primary school students near to our Project Munio, where we are designing and building a new pumping station for Derby City Council. Close to Cinderford Wetlands, a nature-based solution scheme we’re delivering with Severn Trent Water, two members of the MMB design team spent a day at the local junior school where they engaged in activities with around 200 pupils on the topic of wastewater filtration. Following the assembly, Sarah-Jayne Parvin, Customer Liaison Officer for MMB, commented, “The team were delighted that the presentation was received well by the school children and to see so many engaging with site safety – something that could easily be seen as a ‘boring’ subject! We look forward to continuing to work with the community in the future – their support and involvement are critical to the success of this project.” Operations Director, Tom Lewis, added, “Supporting the communities surrounding our sites is of high importance to us. We work hard to develop lasting and trusting relationships with our customers, acting as ambassadors for our clients (explaining why we are doing the work and the resulting benefits). We encourage our teams to add value to the communities in which we work by utilising their time, skills and expertise where possible. Well done to the team at Springwell for being a great example of this.” Above: The MMB team delivering their site safety presentation for children at Springwell Village Primary School, where we’ve been contracted by Northumbrian Water to build a new underground reservoir nearby – a £50m+ scheme that’ll secure water supplies for thousands of customers in South Tyneside. - Follow us on LinkedIn and Twitter to keep up-to-date with the latest news from across the business.
