Our policies ABOUT Repeat business is the recognition that we’re looking for - but it’s nice to pick up an award or two along the way. Awards ABOUT JN Bentley Ltd is part of the global management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald, offering our clients full feasibility, design and construction services throughout the UK. Who we are ABOUT We integrate inclusion and belonging, professional and personal development, and health and wellbeing into our business culture. People OUR APPROACH Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Digital construction Digital construction combines processes, technology, people and information to achieve efficiency and improvements in construction – in programme, quality, cost, safety and carbon. Ways that we deliver construction digitally include: Common Data Environment (CDE) – a modern CDE ensures project data is easily accessible, understandable and accurate. We manage this information in line with our ISO 19650 certification. Valuable BIM data – because Mott MacDonald Bentley is an integrated design and build company, we can design assets to ensure safer and more efficient construction. This means including data such as setting out coordinates in 3D models that can be directly integrated into site engineering equipment, without the need for traditional drawings. Construction technology - whether our own fleet or through strategic hire partnerships, we use the latest site engineering equipment and construction plant. Examples include Leica iCON total stations and controllers, handheld and drone-based laser scanning, and intelligent excavators. Champions - to improve digital construction literacy we’ve formed a community of digital construction champions who share training, guidance, and best practice with the wider team. Case study: intelligent plant Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment scheme involves the creation of new intertidal habitats at the Humber Estuary. The specification demands a natural look with no straight lines permitted, requiring a multitude of complex shapes to be designed at differing depths. This traditionally highly engineer-led work was delivered with Intelligent Machine Control which allowed the plant to work directly from a 3D model. Our plant operative visualises the design via onboard screens then operates the machine exactly to the design. Machine control features, such as auto-stop control, auto grade assist, auto tilt control, minimum distance control and bucket angle hold, help to improve accuracy - meaning the operator can safely rely on the system without digging too deep or damaging the surface. Case study: digital site engineering At a Water Treatment Works in the North East, we embedded digital construction tools and workflows to increase efficiency. The Leica iCON tablet allowed engineers to set out directly from the 3D model. They viewed the 3D design model directly from the cloud, selecting which points they want to mark out; viewed information about each element of the model; made calculations; and supported ground workers with design visualisation – all in the field. This gave the engineers complete autonomy and removed the need for 2D drawings. Case study: data capture At Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works, handheld laser scanners enabled our design team to collect point cloud data of an asset during a regular site walk around. This point cloud gave them accurate positional data of an asset of which they previously had little information on. The data facilitated a collaborative review session in virtual reality (VR) and enabled the team to make right first time design decisions prior to mobilising to site. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications These are the key policy statements of JN Bentley, Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley, setting out the commitments and responsibilities of our business. Our policies ABOUT Repeat business is the recognition that we’re looking for - but it’s nice to pick up an award or two along the way. People OUR APPROACH Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Pushing the boundaries As an employee-owned company, we make our own decisions about where to invest our money. One of these areas of investment is developing ideas and discovering new technology and digital tools to keep us at the forefront of the industry. As part of the Mott MacDonald Group, we collaborate with teams across the world and partner with organisations who recognise us as industry leaders in this space. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – We use AI to check our risk assessments and method statements, drawing from our Operational Safety Standards to give instant, relevant and comprehensive documents which increases our efficiency, productivity, and performance. Data analytics – We develop powerful business intelligence dashboards to provide the insight our teams need to make better decisions. We are also working with partners who use predictive analytics to provide advance knowledge of safety performance based on previous and real-time data fed into an AI powered model. This allows us to deliver proactive support to our projects that need it most. Case study: Digital twins During the design, build and commissioning of a £37m sludge treatment plant at Five Fords in Wales, we identified that the sludge treatment process required complex conditions and a controlled environment to operate successfully. We adopted a digital twin approach to give us and our client more certainty during the commissioning stage to mitigate risk and shorten the lengthy programme. The development of the twin was driven by two key questions: 1. What if we knew how the plant was going to perform in the future? and, 2. What if we could virtually simulate operating conditions before making decisions? A platform to capture, process and visualise the data was also required, as well as a calibrated, real-time model to provide analytics. Our digital twin platform, Moata , processes billions of data points daily and can integrate with multiple software packages and machine learning modules, making it a powerful digital twin platform built for scale. To dynamically model the complex biological process, the industry-leading wastewater simulation software Biowin was used. Biowin, developed by EnviroSim, was integrated with Moata to provide real-time insight into plant operation. The digital twin solution helps to optimise performance, reduce energy use and cut chemical consumption. The Five Fords digital twin has allowed the team to move from reactive to proactive decision-making, and it is creating a real step-change in how we manage our assets. This is one small part of creating a wider digital twin for all water and wastewater assets. It involves building an ecosystem of supply, distribution and treatment assets and integrating catchment-wide aspects of the water cycle, such as rainfall predictions. This will only occur through collaboration and strategic partnerships, ensuring we are using the best expertise on a global level. North Wales Trunk Road Under a framework for North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency we deliver works such as the installation of noise mitigation and vehicle restraint barriers, like these pictured on the A55. Rampside Sea Wall In the North West of England we renewed the current sea wall by placing new rock armour wall to ensure it provided protection to the coast for years to come. Baitings Gate Bridge This project at Baitings Reservoir saw us marry our knowledge of the water industry with our highways expertise. We replaced the 105m bridge deck and constructed new bearings. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Baitings Gate Bridge, which crosses the upstream end of Baitings Impounding Reservoir near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, required significant structural alterations. The brief for the project included the removal of the existing bridge deck structure, refurbishment of the pier heads where required, and construction of a new deck and bearings, designed and constructed to modern bridge standards. Operational constraints on water level led the team to propose a barge and crane arrangement (both in demolition and construction). The project utilised pre-cast concrete products and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to ensure efficient delivery. • Solid waste | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley

Yorwaste We have a long-standing relationship with Yorwaste which dates back to the 1990s, which included the construction of a new leachate treatment plant. Bradford Metropolitan District Council We have carried out a number of household waste recycling centres across the Bradford district, both as new build projects and as extension or refurbishment schemes. Waste Recycling Group Our work with the Waste Recycling Group has seen us construct waste cells, undertake capping works and deliver infrastructure schemes across Yorkshire, East Midlands and the North East. The scope of the works for the project comprised of the construction of nearly 2.5km of 125mm sewer running from Skibeden Landfill Site to the foulwater manhole in Regent Road, Skipton. Laid in the verge of a major highway, road crossings were constructed, together with access points and connections into existing sewer infrastructure. Yorwaste Our work with Waste Recycling Group has seen us deliver landfill facilities across the Yorkshire, East Midlands and North East regions, constructing waste cells, capping works and infrastructure schemes. Our landfill works involved hundreds of thousands of tonnes of bulk earthmoving. For example, at Welbeck Landfill Site, located in West Yorkshire, the site was the subject of sand and gravel workings and subsequent overfilling with colliery spoil from Sharlston Colliery and the Selby Coalfield, so JN Bentley was engaged to construct three new cells. The work was completed by means of cut/fill of materials to specified formation levels, and installation of a composite lining system. Waste Recycling Group We undertook compound works at Path Head Landfill Site to allow SITA UK to open the new 5million m3 capacity facility in accordance with their operational needs for waste void space. The project was delivered as part of an Alliance framework agreement with SITA UK in the North-East of England. The brief was to design and construct the compound infrastructure to facilitate the operation of the site and satisfy all regulatory requirements including PPC, Planning and Building Regulations. We utilised recycled stone in gabions used in retaining walls, and provided a new ecological habitat for Sandmartins and Dingy Skipper Butterfly, in liaison with the county ecologist. Awards ABOUT We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH These frameworks have delivered feasibility, design and construction services principally for landfill operations, but we also have significant experience in the design and construction of household waste recycling centres and waste transfer stations. Our expertise has seen us deliver landfill engineering, leachate treatment, composting and liquid treatment projects. A key ingredient of our success lies in our understanding of client requirements in respect of the regulatory framework that governs their operations – particularly the considerations of the Environment Agency. We are keen to harness our expertise from the water sector to support waste operators in the design and construction of process plants for waste recycling and treatment. Solid waste Traditionally, waste has been a key market for us. We have operated long-term framework agreements with clients including Waste Recycling Group and Yorwaste.
