Meet one of JN Bentley's brilliant people: Gheorghe Ceremus, plant operative

Meet one of our brilliant people: Gheorghe Ceremus, a plant operative based in the Midlands.

Gheorghe explains how he is delivering excellence, precision and safety to the projects he works on across the region.

What is your role and what are you currently working on?

I work as a plant operative for JN Bentley, currently working on a project at Lichfield Reservoir, which involves the design-and-build of a new reservoir to increase drinking water capacity in the region.

The scheme involves a lot of machinery, which is my area of expertise, and as a plant operator, I’m qualified to operate diggers, wheeled excavators and a number of other machines to dig, drive, excavate and ultimately follow a design to completion.

Tell us about a recent project and how you delivered excellence?

A standout project for me is my previous scheme at Didsbury, Manchester. The project was an emergency scheme to rebuild a dam, following damage during overflow.

I delivered excellence by utilising a built-in GPS on the excavator, to match the exact design accurately and on time – avoiding any additional rework. The drive to deliver excellence on this project was from a place of taking pride in my work, whilst being safe, neat and efficient – something I think all plant operators strive for.

What advice would you give to someone looking to shape their own story at JN Bentley?

Work hard and take responsibility when the opportunity arises – people will notice your success.

One thing that has stuck with me throughout my time at JN Bentley is that “communication is key”. No matter the job, you need to communicate with your team to ensure success.

What opportunities have you had to grow your specialism or develop your career at JN Bentley?

Whilst at JN Bentley, I’ve had a number of opportunities to develop, mainly through industry training courses including earning my crane tickets, lifting certificates and additional training include how to operate a CAT and Genny.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be strong, be positive – sometimes things go wrong but you have to carry a positive attitude into your work, to pick yourself up and learn from the experience.

What has been your proudest achievement?

My family. My career journey started in my home country, Romania – where I first started as a plant operator, before moving to Italy then France and finally the UK. All along the way my family has been with me, supporting my journey.

What hidden talent do you have?  

My hidden talent is languages, I learn fast and can speak English, Romanian, Russian and Italian. I learn by watching films with subtitles, as you can pick up a language quickly that way.

Do you have a mantra you live by or that motivates you? If so, what is it?

My mantra is “keep going until you’re proud”.
