Meet one of our brilliant people: Gheorghe Ceremus, a plant operative in the Midlands.

Gheorghe speaks about his work on our Severn Trent framework, his unique career path in the construction industry and the secret to learning four languages.

What is your role and what are you currently working on?

I’m a plant operative, based in the Midlands, delivering work on MMB’s Severn Trent framework, at Lichfield Reservoir. A scheme which involves the design-and-build of a new reservoir, to increase drinking water capacity in the region.

The scheme involves a lot of heavy plant and machinery, an area which I specialise in. As a plant operator, I’m qualified to operate excavators, diggers and a number of other machines to dig, drive, excavate and ultimately bring a design to life.

How do you deliver excellence in your role?

One standout example of delivering excellence in my role, was the utilisation of the latest in GPS technology to mirror a design during an emergency scheme at Didsbury, Manchester for the Canal & River Trust.

I delivered excellence by utilising a built-in GPS on an excavator to match the exact design accurately, avoiding any rework and ensuring the job was delivered in a safe, neat and efficient fashion – something I think all plant operators strive for.

What advice would you give to someone looking to shape their own story at JN Bentley?

Work hard and take responsibility when the opportunity arises – people will notice your success.

One thing that has stuck with me throughout my time at JN Bentley is that “communication is key”. No matter the job, you need to communicate with your team to ensure success.

What opportunities have you had to grow your specialism or develop your career at JN Bentley?

Whilst at JN Bentley, I’ve had a number of opportunities to develop, mainly through industry training courses including earning my crane tickets, lifting certificates and additional training such as how to operate a CAT and Genny.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Be strong, be positive – sometimes things go wrong but you have to carry a positive attitude into your work, to pick yourself up and learn from the experience.

What has been your proudest achievement?

My family. They have been with me every step of my career journey, from starting out in my home country of Romania, moving to Italy, France then working in the UK. They have been there all along the way to support me.

What hidden talent do you have?  

My hidden talent is learning and speaking languages. I learn fast and speak English, Romanian, Russian and Italian. The trick to learning is watching films with subtitles of the language you want to learn, as I found you can pick up a language quickly that way.

Do you have a mantra you live by or that motivates you? If so, what is it?

My mantra is “keep going until you’re proud”.
