Digital delivery OUR APPROACH Health and safety We integrate inclusion and belonging, professional and personal development, and health and wellbeing into our business culture. People OUR APPROACH Teamwork and collaboration Augmented reality Digital design We use cutting edge digital tools and processes to produce engineering designs that are innovative, low carbon, and safe to build, operate, maintain and demolish. Through global enterprise agreements with industry leading technology companies, we provide our staff with the latest tools available to operate at their full potential. We use our own industry-leading digital solutions platform, Moata , to help solve our clients’ pressing problems using the power of data. An example is Moata Carbon Portal , which is used across all of our projects, standardising the way we calculate and reduce embodied carbon in the assets we design and construct for our clients. Case study: BIM 360/Autodesk Construction cloud BIM 360 is a common data environment (CDE) that we use to manage our graphical data. It supports informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle for project design and construction teams. It enables multiple people to access data from a single source of information where colleagues, suppliers, and our clients can collaborate at the same time, as one team. It allows team members to interact with our 3D model design, collaborate with other team members and raise issues connected with specific parts of the model. It also ensures that our designs are following our standard information management procedures. Case study: Moata solutions – Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) We’re continuing to use our Moata Geospatial and Moata Land Management solutions in the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) to deliver significant savings on this important piece of national infrastructure. Moata Land Management was used to provide all parties involved in project design and delivery and members of the Alliance access to the same data through a single database. This enabled a coordinated and consistent approach to identifying landowners, managing land access and survey requests with stakeholders. The solutions alone have saved an estimated £2 million over 18 months. Moata has allowed the SPA team to efficiently analyse data and derive insights, improving outcomes. • Digital construction | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley

JN Bentley's "Digital Construction" page details their integration of technology, processes, and data for efficient, safe, and quality construction Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Repeat business is the recognition that we’re looking for - but it’s nice to pick up an award or two along the way. How do we achieve this? Through our Quality, Cost & Efficiency Strategy. Quality, cost and efficiency OUR APPROACH This is an overview of digital in JN Bentley, including our investment in digital delivery and our company digital transformation and how it is embedded in everything we do. Digital delivery OUR APPROACH Digital construction Digital construction combines processes, technology, people and information to achieve efficiency and improvements in construction – in programme, quality, cost, safety and carbon. Ways that we deliver construction digitally include: Common Data Environment (CDE) – a modern CDE ensures project data is easily accessible, understandable and accurate. We manage this information in line with our ISO 19650 certification. Valuable BIM data – because Mott MacDonald Bentley is an integrated design and build company, we can design assets to ensure safer and more efficient construction. This means including data such as setting out coordinates in 3D models that can be directly integrated into site engineering equipment, without the need for traditional drawings. Construction technology - whether our own fleet or through strategic hire partnerships, we use the latest site engineering equipment and construction plant. Examples include Leica iCON total stations and controllers, handheld and drone-based laser scanning, and intelligent excavators. Champions - to improve digital construction literacy we’ve formed a community of digital construction champions who share training, guidance, and best practice with the wider team. Case study: intelligent plant Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment scheme involves the creation of new intertidal habitats at the Humber Estuary. The specification demands a natural look with no straight lines permitted, requiring a multitude of complex shapes to be designed at differing depths. This traditionally highly engineer-led work was delivered with Intelligent Machine Control which allowed the plant to work directly from a 3D model. Our plant operative visualises the design via onboard screens then operates the machine exactly to the design. Machine control features, such as auto-stop control, auto grade assist, auto tilt control, minimum distance control and bucket angle hold, help to improve accuracy - meaning the operator can safely rely on the system without digging too deep or damaging the surface. Case study: digital site engineering At a Water Treatment Works in the North East, we embedded digital construction tools and workflows to increase efficiency. The Leica iCON tablet allowed engineers to set out directly from the 3D model. They viewed the 3D design model directly from the cloud, selecting which points they want to mark out; viewed information about each element of the model; made calculations; and supported ground workers with design visualisation – all in the field. This gave the engineers complete autonomy and removed the need for 2D drawings. Case study: data capture At Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works, handheld laser scanners enabled our design team to collect point cloud data of an asset during a regular site walk around. This point cloud gave them accurate positional data of an asset of which they previously had little information on. The data facilitated a collaborative review session in virtual reality (VR) and enabled the team to make right first time design decisions prior to mobilising to site. Read more on Water Projects Online. Hallbank Tunnel A dam safety programme across the whole of Wales capitalised on our extensive reservoir experience. Projects varied in scope and scale but all ultimately ensured our client was left with upgraded assets that meet stringent legal requirements. We increased scour capacity at Llandegfedd so that the reservoir can be lowered faster should there be an emergency. Our solution utilised the existing infrastructure, installing three sets of twin valves to the tower and coring directly into the overflow shaft. Together with costing just 20% of a traditional siphon solution, this methodology reduced carbon by 80%. Complex scaffolding was required to facilitate safe working over water. Access was suspended from the top of the tower as each 1.5t valve was transferred by barge ready for lifting into position. We constructed a new spillway at Lluest Wen that followed the alignment of the old one to minimise future maintenance requirements. Working three miles from the nearest surfaced road and around 1400ft above sea level, the new spillway required installation of reinforced concrete on gradients up to 1:2 and with some walls 6m high. CFD analysis identified that forces on the walls were less than for a typical spillway wall, allowing us to optimise the wall design by making them slimmer with a lower reinforcement density. This significantly reduced the quantity of concrete and reinforcement needed, as well as subcontract and labour costs. Reservoir safety in Wales One of the largest schemes in our history saw us complete the design and build of a new £45m advanced anaerobic digester (AAD) facility at Stoke Bardolph Sewage Treatment Works. The facility turns sewage into biogas that is exported to the gas network and treats remaining solids so they can be used as high-grade fertiliser. To achieve an ambitious programme of contract award to completion in just two years, the project championed DfMA, digital and innovative solutions. This included a productivity saving of 26 weeks made by manufacturing, assembling and testing the steam generating boiler house off site. Read more on Water Projects Online. Stoke Bardolph Advanced Anaerobic Digestion Upgrades to a major water treatment works in the north west of England are maximising its output, reducing the average ‘unit cost to treat’ to make it the most cost-effective water treatment asset in the area. The project saw us improve several key treatment processes through the installation of new rapid gravity filters (RGFs), lamella clarifiers and flocculation tanks, and upgrades to the pH correction system. Digital innovation was at the forefront of project delivery. The use of BIM 360, extended reality, the latest hand held scanning technology, intelligent machine control and digital inspection and test records helped to foster collaboration, improve safety and drive efficiencies throughout the project. Bewdley Bank Service Reservoir Following a routine safety inspection, recommendations were made to ensure the ongoing resilience and capability of the reservoir at Lower Barden. Our client appointed MMB to improve the drawdown capacity, control leakages and modify the spillway channel to prevent floodwater from breaching the spillway structure. Due to its location in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the scheme was legally required to conserve and enhance the historic and natural environment. During design, the decision was made to maintain the sloped walls and the curved steps to retain the heritage of the structure, with masonry used from a nearby quarry to be in keeping with the surrounding area. The installation of a new self-priming siphon now ensures the total drawdown capacity reaches minus 5m from top water level within 5 days, meeting the safety requirements. Lower Barden Impounding Reservoir First built in the 1970s, Embsay Water Treatment Works is a 24ML/d water treatment site. To address risks to drinking water quality, the outline solution involved the construction of a new interstage pumping station, new manganese filters and a start-up-to-waste facility. However, utilising our low carbon solutions in design approach, the PAS 2080 principles, and our Moata Carbon Portal tool, we were able to optimise the solution to deliver significant carbon, cost, and programme savings. Through optimising existing plant processes, re-using existing assets and maximising build efficiency in design we reduced the whole life carbon on the project by 77%. The final solution was a single precast concrete structure consisting of a new three compartment contact tank, clean backwash tank and drywell pumping station.
