- Celebrating our heritage | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley
Founded in 1972, JN Bentley has seen significant growth in the years since, delivering work across the building, civil engineering and environmental sectors across the UK. 1970s JN Bentley was founded in 1972 and was principally involved in water and sewerage works. 1980s The 1980s saw JN Bentley become something of a pioneer in providing both design and build services to clients in-house. 1990s Together with a focus on civil engineering, the 1990s saw JN Bentley diversify its operations into the waste sector too. 2000s As MMB became more established, the 2000s saw geographical expansion as we built new office premises in Durham and secured a place on a new framework with Severn Trent Water. Present day JN Bentley joined the Mott MacDonald Group in 2014, building on 15 years of success through MMB. Quality, cost and efficiency OUR APPROACH This is an overview of digital in JN Bentley, including our investment in digital delivery and our company digital transformation and how it is embedded in everything we do. Digital delivery OUR APPROACH Digital construction Digital construction combines processes, technology, people and information to achieve efficiency and improvements in construction – in programme, quality, cost, safety and carbon. Ways that we deliver construction digitally include: Common Data Environment (CDE) – a modern CDE ensures project data is easily accessible, understandable and accurate. We manage this information in line with our ISO 19650 certification. Valuable BIM data – because Mott MacDonald Bentley is an integrated design and build company, we can design assets to ensure safer and more efficient construction. This means including data such as setting out coordinates in 3D models that can be directly integrated into site engineering equipment, without the need for traditional drawings. Construction technology - whether our own fleet or through strategic hire partnerships, we use the latest site engineering equipment and construction plant. Examples include Leica iCON total stations and controllers, handheld and drone-based laser scanning, and intelligent excavators. Champions - to improve digital construction literacy we’ve formed a community of digital construction champions who share training, guidance, and best practice with the wider team. Case study: intelligent plant Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment scheme involves the creation of new intertidal habitats at the Humber Estuary. The specification demands a natural look with no straight lines permitted, requiring a multitude of complex shapes to be designed at differing depths. This traditionally highly engineer-led work was delivered with Intelligent Machine Control which allowed the plant to work directly from a 3D model. Our plant operative visualises the design via onboard screens then operates the machine exactly to the design. Machine control features, such as auto-stop control, auto grade assist, auto tilt control, minimum distance control and bucket angle hold, help to improve accuracy - meaning the operator can safely rely on the system without digging too deep or damaging the surface. Case study: digital site engineering At a Water Treatment Works in the North East, we embedded digital construction tools and workflows to increase efficiency. The Leica iCON tablet allowed engineers to set out directly from the 3D model. They viewed the 3D design model directly from the cloud, selecting which points they want to mark out; viewed information about each element of the model; made calculations; and supported ground workers with design visualisation – all in the field. This gave the engineers complete autonomy and removed the need for 2D drawings. Case study: data capture At Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works, handheld laser scanners enabled our design team to collect point cloud data of an asset during a regular site walk around. This point cloud gave them accurate positional data of an asset of which they previously had little information on. The data facilitated a collaborative review session in virtual reality (VR) and enabled the team to make right first time design decisions prior to mobilising to site. People OUR APPROACH Operations Digital design We use cutting edge digital tools and processes to produce engineering designs that are innovative, low carbon, and safe to build, operate, maintain and demolish. Through global enterprise agreements with industry leading technology companies, we provide our staff with the latest tools available to operate at their full potential. We use our own industry-leading digital solutions platform, Moata , to help solve our clients’ pressing problems using the power of data. An example is Moata Carbon Portal , which is used across all of our projects, standardising the way we calculate and reduce embodied carbon in the assets we design and construct for our clients. Case study: BIM 360/Autodesk Construction cloud BIM 360 is a common data environment (CDE) that we use to manage our graphical data. It supports informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle for project design and construction teams. It enables multiple people to access data from a single source of information where colleagues, suppliers, and our clients can collaborate at the same time, as one team. It allows team members to interact with our 3D model design, collaborate with other team members and raise issues connected with specific parts of the model. It also ensures that our designs are following our standard information management procedures. Case study: Moata solutions – Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) We’re continuing to use our Moata Geospatial and Moata Land Management solutions in the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) to deliver significant savings on this important piece of national infrastructure. Moata Land Management was used to provide all parties involved in project design and delivery and members of the Alliance access to the same data through a single database. This enabled a coordinated and consistent approach to identifying landowners, managing land access and survey requests with stakeholders. The solutions alone have saved an estimated £2 million over 18 months. Moata has allowed the SPA team to efficiently analyse data and derive insights, improving outcomes. Case study: Moata solutions – Living with Water Used together, Moata Geospatial and Moata Inspect aid collaboration on project data with easy data capture, review and monitoring. Living With Water is a partnership between Yorkshire Water, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Environment Agency and the University of Hull, working together to build flood resilience, develop innovative water management systems, and highlight the region as a great place to live, work and visit. We used Moata Geospatial and Moata Inspect to help collect digital survey data and present it on a GIS map platform with other geospatial data in a fully digital workflow. This provided a comprehensive view of the data collection and allowed the team to make informed, right first time decisions. Case study: Moata solutions - Intelligent content Moata Intelligent Content (MIC) is our digital component catalogue with easy-to-use access to a vast, fully managed library of standardised design, procurement, construction and commissioning documentation. MIC allows teams to repeat the delivery of projects to achieve our vision of increased efficiency. Intelligent Content is a vital way of using the digital knowledge capital we generate as our primary output, enabling us to deliver better services to our clients.
