Rampside Sea Wall In the North West of England we renewed the current sea wall by placing new rock armour wall to ensure it provided protection to the coast for years to come. Baitings Gate Bridge This project at Baitings Reservoir saw us marry our knowledge of the water industry with our highways expertise. We replaced the 105m bridge deck and constructed new bearings. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Baitings Gate Bridge, which crosses the upstream end of Baitings Impounding Reservoir near Ripponden, West Yorkshire, required significant structural alterations. The brief for the project included the removal of the existing bridge deck structure, refurbishment of the pier heads where required, and construction of a new deck and bearings, designed and constructed to modern bridge standards. Operational constraints on water level led the team to propose a barge and crane arrangement (both in demolition and construction). The project utilised pre-cast concrete products and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to ensure efficient delivery. Ways that we deliver construction digitally include: Common Data Environment (CDE) – a modern CDE ensures project data is easily accessible, understandable and accurate. We manage this information in line with our ISO 19650 certification. Valuable BIM data – because Mott MacDonald Bentley is an integrated design and build company, we can design assets to ensure safer and more efficient construction. This means including data such as setting out coordinates in 3D models that can be directly integrated into site engineering equipment, without the need for traditional drawings. Construction technology - whether our own fleet or through strategic hire partnerships, we use the latest site engineering equipment and construction plant. Examples include Leica iCON total stations and controllers, handheld and drone-based laser scanning, and intelligent excavators. Champions - to improve digital construction literacy we’ve formed a community of digital construction champions who share training, guidance, and best practice with the wider team. Case study: intelligent plant Outstrays to Skeffling Managed Realignment scheme involves the creation of new intertidal habitats at the Humber Estuary. The specification demands a natural look with no straight lines permitted, requiring a multitude of complex shapes to be designed at differing depths. This traditionally highly engineer-led work was delivered with Intelligent Machine Control which allowed the plant to work directly from a 3D model. Our plant operative visualises the design via onboard screens then operates the machine exactly to the design. Machine control features, such as auto-stop control, auto grade assist, auto tilt control, minimum distance control and bucket angle hold, help to improve accuracy - meaning the operator can safely rely on the system without digging too deep or damaging the surface. Case study: digital site engineering At a Water Treatment Works in the North East, we embedded digital construction tools and workflows to increase efficiency. The Leica iCON tablet allowed engineers to set out directly from the 3D model. They viewed the 3D design model directly from the cloud, selecting which points they want to mark out; viewed information about each element of the model; made calculations; and supported ground workers with design visualisation – all in the field. This gave the engineers complete autonomy and removed the need for 2D drawings. Case study: data capture At Esholt Wastewater Treatment Works, handheld laser scanners enabled our design team to collect point cloud data of an asset during a regular site walk around. This point cloud gave them accurate positional data of an asset of which they previously had little information on. The data facilitated a collaborative review session in virtual reality (VR) and enabled the team to make right first time design decisions prior to mobilising to site. It aligns design with the construction programme and drives collaboration between people and technology, enabling project teams to rehearse the construction sequence at the right time with the right set of people to identify the best sequence in terms of safety, supply-chain, operational site interfaces and temporary works logistics. Designers get a better understanding of buildability and construction teams understand the specification and any client operational constraints. Case study: Hallbank Tunnel Hallbank involved a short shutdown of an aqueduct supplying 2.5 million customers with 570 million litres of water a day. After nearly two years of main works, our client handed the entire site over to us to complete the connections. At its peak, 90 engineers on round-the-clock shifts worked at each connection. We developed a highly detailed 4D model that facilitated collaborative rehearsals with the team and ensured the operation was meticulously planned. The connections were a success, and the site was handed back to our client early. The 4D model maximised efficiency and supported collaboration between the design and construction teams. The model also helped to identify temporary works and process constraints, beyond the realm of 3D clash detection. Case study: Embsay Water Treatment Works During the investigation and tender stage at Embsay, SYNCHRO 4D was used to create a digital rehearsal to better understand sequencing on an extremely tight site. Outputs from the rehearsal led directly to programme updates, saving 10 weeks and over £100,000 in preliminary site costs. Driving innovation in sustainable energy solutions for a greener future Linton Falls Hydro We constructed a 120kW twin hydro turbine, on a small weir at Linton Falls on the River Wharf within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, bringing the asset back to life for the first time since 1948. Low Wood Hydro We installed two new Archimedean screw turbines as part of the refurbishment of the hydroelectric plant at the historic Low Wood Gunpowder Works within the scenic Lake District National Park. Tees Barrage We redeveloped this white water course to create a world-class training facility used in the 2012 Olympic Games. The project, at the time, was the only installation where Archimedean screws were used as both pumps and generators. Rolls-Royce plc We have a long association with Rolls-Royce plc and have worked together across a number of different sites, delivering over 100 design-and-build and commission-only projects from small external works to brand new multi-million pound facilities. The project involved significant earthworks, sub-structure and superstructure works. We provided full ‘turn-key’ internal fit out and services installations, as well as all associated external hard and soft landscaping. The scheme involved extensive drainage works via a series of silt traps and oil interceptors and a foul pump station. Case study: Moata solutions – Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) We’re continuing to use our Moata Geospatial and Moata Land Management solutions in the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) to deliver significant savings on this important piece of national infrastructure. Moata Land Management was used to provide all parties involved in project design and delivery and members of the Alliance access to the same data through a single database. This enabled a coordinated and consistent approach to identifying landowners, managing land access and survey requests with stakeholders. The solutions alone have saved an estimated £2 million over 18 months. Moata has allowed the SPA team to efficiently analyse data and derive insights, improving outcomes. Case study: Moata solutions – Living with Water Used together, Moata Geospatial and Moata Inspect aid collaboration on project data with easy data capture, review and monitoring.
