  • Pushing digital boundaries | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley

Mott MacDonald's "Pushing the Boundaries" page showcases AI and data analytics use in innovative tech development and digital twin case studies Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Enhancing the environment Supporting society Carbon reduction People Digital construction This is an overview of digital in JN Bentley, including our investment in digital delivery and our company digital transformation and how it is embedded in everything we do. Digital delivery OUR APPROACH Pushing the boundaries As an employee-owned company, we make our own decisions about where to invest our money. One of these areas of investment is developing ideas and discovering new technology and digital tools to keep us at the forefront of the industry. As part of the Mott MacDonald Group, we collaborate with teams across the world and partner with organisations who recognise us as industry leaders in this space. Artificial Intelligence (AI) – We use AI to check our risk assessments and method statements, drawing from our Operational Safety Standards to give instant, relevant and comprehensive documents which increases our efficiency, productivity, and performance. Data analytics – We develop powerful business intelligence dashboards to provide the insight our teams need to make better decisions. We are also working with partners who use predictive analytics to provide advance knowledge of safety performance based on previous and real-time data fed into an AI powered model. This allows us to deliver proactive support to our projects that need it most. Case study: Digital twins During the design, build and commissioning of a £37m sludge treatment plant at Five Fords in Wales, we identified that the sludge treatment process required complex conditions and a controlled environment to operate successfully. We adopted a digital twin approach to give us and our client more certainty during the commissioning stage to mitigate risk and shorten the lengthy programme. The development of the twin was driven by two key questions: 1. What if we knew how the plant was going to perform in the future? and, 2. What if we could virtually simulate operating conditions before making decisions? A platform to capture, process and visualise the data was also required, as well as a calibrated, real-time model to provide analytics. Our digital twin platform, Moata , processes billions of data points daily and can integrate with multiple software packages and machine learning modules, making it a powerful digital twin platform built for scale. To dynamically model the complex biological process, the industry-leading wastewater simulation software Biowin was used. Biowin, developed by EnviroSim, was integrated with Moata to provide real-time insight into plant operation. The digital twin solution helps to optimise performance, reduce energy use and cut chemical consumption. The Five Fords digital twin has allowed the team to move from reactive to proactive decision-making, and it is creating a real step-change in how we manage our assets. This is one small part of creating a wider digital twin for all water and wastewater assets. It involves building an ecosystem of supply, distribution and treatment assets and integrating catchment-wide aspects of the water cycle, such as rainfall predictions. This will only occur through collaboration and strategic partnerships, ensuring we are using the best expertise on a global level. Working collaboratively with our clients on flood protection, asset repair and more. Saltburn Gill Mine Water Treatment Scheme We have constructed a number of new mine water treatment works, including this one, at Saltburn Gill for our client The Coal Authority. Whitburn Sea Outfall We also construct sea outfalls for The Coal Authority, including this design and build project at Whitburn in the North East of England. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Built in 1987 in response to severe flooding five years earlier, the Foss Barrier forms an important part of the flood defences of York. A gate can be closed to prevent rising waters in the River Ouse from backing up into the River Foss and flooding parts of the city. In December 2015 floods hit York once again, with waters rising into the electrical switch room for the incoming mains supply, rendering it inoperable. After significant involvement in the emergency response to the floods we were then engaged by the EA to deliver permanent upgrade works on site. At the core of these works is an upgrade to the Foss Barrier Pumping Station where we are increasing the capacity of the pumping station through the installation of eight new pumps and associated MEICA equipment. Each pump weighs 6.5 tonnes and is capable of pumping 6m³/second. The upgraded equipment will be housed within an extension to the existing building that will lift all critical equipment above the flood zone. To facilitate this, all equipment has been temporarily located on a purpose built platform. Foss Barrier We constructed a mine water treatment works at Saltburn Gill in the North East of England to stop untreated iron stone mine water from being discharged into the natural environment. Ochre deposits were polluting 2km of watercourse, generating large ‘ochre aprons’ on the slopes of the tributary and directly preventing salmon migration, as well as threatening 1km of Saltburn beach. The works were delivered in two phases, and comprised of the construction of four settlement ponds; each with pre-cast concrete inlet, outlet and aeration cascade structures; together with a sludge drying bed and new wetland. Saltburn Gill The first scheme we have delivered under the Coal Authority’s design and build Confluence’ framework was in the North East of England, at Whitburn Sea Outfall. A solution was required to reduce and maintain water levels by pumping from a nearby mine via a borehole to the sea. A successful test phase proved the validity of the solution – the installation of a 450m-long outfall from the mine shaft to a point 150m out at sea. To install the pipework in fragmented limestone (a rock-type susceptible to collapse), instead of drilling and then lining the void before pulling the main pipework back through, our solution saw the casing itself become the outfall pipe. Whitburn Sea Outfall A significant number of our schemes involve working with clients such as the EA to implement preventative measures to guard against issues such as flooding. A tidal surge in early December 2013 caused widespread disruption along the East Coast, with many properties flooded and extensive erosion of coastal areas. The surge entered the Humber and associated rivers, filling the River Ouse and then entering the Dutch River. Having identified the unstable banking on this stretch of river, delivered a three-phase scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to surrounding areas and properties at times of high tides. The solution has seen us construct a permanent flood defence using a combination of sheet and continuous flight auger (CFA) piling, steel tendons and rock armour to reinforce the embankment. Over £1m was invested in the temporary works at Chantry Cottages, including 25,000 tonnes of stone used for ramps and piling platforms, some of which has since been reused on other schemes. These temporary works were crucial in enabling the permanent works to be delivered safely. The extension is reward for the hard work and dedication of the teams involved in the framework since its inception in October 2014. They have developed great relationships with the client, delivering safe, efficient and sustainable solutions across a large geographical area. The ARPW is largely focused on improving the condition of flood defences that protect properties, critical infrastructure and prime agricultural land from both fluvial and tidal flooding. Both teamwork and leadership have been essential to the successful delivery of a challenging programme. Key too has been the streamlining and pooling of construction activities and resources, driving a reduction in costs, delivery duration and carbon footprint. Asset Recovery Programme of Works The Coal Authority has a responsibility to treat mine water before it is discharged into the natural environment. One way of achieving this is to use a passive mine water treatment scheme. The scheme at Craig yr Aber, near Bridgend in Wales, involved the construction of two settlement ponds, two wetlands and two drying beds. These features remove iron from the water in an entirely ‘passive’ way – no chemicals are required to assist the process. Saturated ground conditions led the project team to use innovative bales made of recycled tyres to engineer the embankments on site. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Augmented reality We use the latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology in project design and delivery to help us better understand challenges on site, identify design or programme clashes early and improve the safety of the construction phase. Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of the real physical world that is achieved using digital visual elements, sound, or sensory stimuli delivered via technology. In terms of construction, it allows 3D digital models to be projected onto sites through a device, such as a tablet, phone, or headset. Case study: Project Munio We used Visual Live, an augmented reality tool, to visualise the position of construction elements and efficiently plan site works for Derby County Council. This helped the site team to better understand site constraints and plan the works safely as it was a very tight and complex site location. Case study: Grimsby On this scheme we used AR to visualise below ground services. Avoiding service strikes is critical when operating below ground, so having the ability to visualise services prior to digging makes avoidance much easier and improves excavation safety. Explore JN Bentley's expertise in the water and wastewater sector. Delivering innovative solutions for sustainable water management and infrastructure Blackpool In Blackpool we are helping improve the bathing water quality by increasing the capacity of the sewerage network and reducing the volume of surface water entering the sewer system. Whitlingham Cake Reception At Whitlingham we drove a number of savings, including the reuse of material used for the temporary works within the permanent works as sub-base for the structures and access roads. Jacksons Edge Service Reservoir 126 concrete wall units, 132 beams, 120 columns and 400 roof slabs were all pre-cast in factory conditions away from Jacksons Edge before being delivered to site and carefully crane-lifted into place. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications We delivered a £34m project to upgrade Hull WwTW – a site serving a population equivalent of 1 million people. We constructed a new elevated inlet works for the preliminary treatment of raw sewage, new liquid import, cake import and rewetting, and dewatering facilities, plus refurbished the existing sludge treatment facility (STF). The new dedicated flow to full treatment inlet works comprised elevated coarse screens, grit removal and fine screens, a return liquors pumping station and new odour control plant. To eliminate the need for high-level temporary works and to expedite construction, we incorporated the temporary works into the permanent works design. The STF refurbishment was undertaken whilst maintaining full treatment capacity, which required a phased approach to delivery, further restricted by high seasonal summer loading and high winter energy demand. Our solution includes the construction of floating treatment wetlands that provide the first stage of the treatment process. Nature-based solutions We delivered a high-profile project replacing a 2.5km section of the Haweswater Aqueduct – the backbone of United Utilities’ network supplying water to 2.5 million customers every day. The project, praised for connecting the new pipes during a shutdown of less than eight days, scooped the Pipeline Industries Guild Utility Project of the Year Award, was highly commended in the British Construction Industry Awards, a finalist at NCE TechFest Awards for Best Use of Technology: Site Productivity and shortlisted at the Ground Engineering Awards in the Sustainability category. Projects varied in scope and scale but all ultimately ensured our client was left with upgraded assets that meet stringent legal requirements. We increased scour capacity at Llandegfedd so that the reservoir can be lowered faster should there be an emergency. Our solution utilised the existing infrastructure, installing three sets of twin valves to the tower and coring directly into the overflow shaft. Together with costing just 20% of a traditional siphon solution, this methodology reduced carbon by 80%. Complex scaffolding was required to facilitate safe working over water. Access was suspended from the top of the tower as each 1.5t valve was transferred by barge ready for lifting into position. We constructed a new spillway at Lluest Wen that followed the alignment of the old one to minimise future maintenance requirements. Working three miles from the nearest surfaced road and around 1400ft above sea level, the new spillway required installation of reinforced concrete on gradients up to 1:2 and with some walls 6m high. CFD analysis identified that forces on the walls were less than for a typical spillway wall, allowing us to optimise the wall design by making them slimmer with a lower reinforcement density. This significantly reduced the quantity of concrete and reinforcement needed, as well as subcontract and labour costs. Reservoir safety in Wales One of the largest schemes in our history saw us complete the design and build of a new £45m advanced anaerobic digester (AAD) facility at Stoke Bardolph Sewage Treatment Works. The facility turns sewage into biogas that is exported to the gas network and treats remaining solids so they can be used as high-grade fertiliser. To achieve an ambitious programme of contract award to completion in just two years, the project championed DfMA, digital and innovative solutions. This included a productivity saving of 26 weeks made by manufacturing, assembling and testing the steam generating boiler house off site. Read more on Water Projects Online. Bewdley Bank Service Reservoir Following a routine safety inspection, recommendations were made to ensure the ongoing resilience and capability of the reservoir at Lower Barden. Our client appointed MMB to improve the drawdown capacity, control leakages and modify the spillway channel to prevent floodwater from breaching the spillway structure. Due to its location in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the scheme was legally required to conserve and enhance the historic and natural environment. During design, the decision was made to maintain the sloped walls and the curved steps to retain the heritage of the structure, with masonry used from a nearby quarry to be in keeping with the surrounding area. The installation of a new self-priming siphon now ensures the total drawdown capacity reaches minus 5m from top water level within 5 days, meeting the safety requirements. Lower Barden Impounding Reservoir First built in the 1970s, Embsay Water Treatment Works is a 24ML/d water treatment site. To address risks to drinking water quality, the outline solution involved the construction of a new interstage pumping station, new manganese filters and a start-up-to-waste facility. However, utilising our low carbon solutions in design approach, the PAS 2080 principles, and our Moata Carbon Portal tool, we were able to optimise the solution to deliver significant carbon, cost, and programme savings. Through optimising existing plant processes, re-using existing assets and maximising build efficiency in design we reduced the whole life carbon on the project by 77%. The final solution was a single precast concrete structure consisting of a new three compartment contact tank, clean backwash tank and drywell pumping station.
