  • Net zero award win for Mott MacDonald Bentley

Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has taken home the coveted Net Zero award at the annual Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Yorkshire and Humber Awards. At Yorkshire Water’s largest sewage treatment works in Esholt, near Leeds, lead contractor MMB collaborated with supply chain partners Hyperion and Tarmac to explore the latest sustainable construction solutions and techniques – bringing to life a 3D-printed concrete design to replace standard applications. As a result, four bespoke drawpits – traditionally heavy, box-shaped structures placed underground for the containment of electrical cabling – have been designed and put in place at Esholt thanks to the new robotic technology. By challenging the design requirements and identifying carbon hotspots, the team have been able to implement the carbon hierarchy whilst still meeting the project outcomes and saving approximately 300 tonnes of carbon. The innovative scheme won the Net Zero award after the judges were impressed with the project’s “excellent commitment to net zero, reducing its embodied carbon by two thirds, while repurposing existing infrastructure thanks to clever collaborative design.” Ruth Watson, MMB Project Leader, said, “It’s been an absolute pleasure designing and delivering this scheme following the principles of build nothing, build less, build clever and build efficiently. More than ever we need to be doing what we can to tackle the climate crisis. "Esholt is a prime example of how the design and site team have strived to implement low carbon solutions by challenging different design elements through value engineering trial in the use of 3D printing and working with the client. Congratulations to all those nominated and awarded!" Congratulations also to the MMB team at Gouthwaite Reservoir - where a new siphon to improve drawdown capacity has been designed and constructed - and the JN Bentley team carrying out washwall repairs at Empire Mills for the Canal & River Trust: both projects were awarded certificates of commendation. MMB is committed to becoming net zero by 2040 through its carbon approach. The company is proud to be at the forefront of innovation in the industry, meeting clients’ needs for low carbon solutions and accelerating progress towards a net-zero built environment. • Mott MacDonald Bentley supports local communities at Christmas

Over the festive period, colleagues from across Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) have been organising charitable activities to give back to local communities – part of the company's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) approach to supporting society and charitable giving. Highlights from colleagues across the country include teams based in the Midlands, who raised over £1400 for two local organisations: Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Dougie Mac Hospice. The teams hosted two Christmas-themed fundraisers for the charities – where all colleagues got involved by competing in a Christmas jumper competition. Dougie Mac is based just down the road from MMB's Strongford site and provides all hospice services free of charge to adults, young adults and children living with a life-limiting illness, also offering supportive care for their families and carers. Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a specialist paediatric centre delivering advanced and complex treatments to over 100,000 children and young people. In the North East, at Springwell - where MMB is engineering a £53m reservoir with Northumbrian Water - colleagues chose to support the Nite Light Charity after being inspired by a Facebook post seeking support to help the homeless. This led to the team getting creative - making sleeping bag linings from recycled crisp packets. It’s a meticulous process: each crisp packet is carefully cleaned, dried, and ironed with greaseproof paper, then fortified with recycled plastic. This innovative initiative goes beyond recycling - it's a commitment to sustainability and providing comfort to those in need. Through its continued CSR approach, the company aims to make a positive difference by giving back to the communities in which it works, by providing skills, time and expertise to support community projects – and these Christmas initiatives are a great example of this.
