Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications These are the key policy statements of JN Bentley, Mott MacDonald Bentley and JBA Bentley, setting out the commitments and responsibilities of our business. Our policies ABOUT Repeat business is the recognition that we’re looking for - but it’s nice to pick up an award or two along the way. Awards ABOUT JN Bentley Ltd is part of the global management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald, offering our clients full feasibility, design and construction services throughout the UK. Who we are ABOUT We integrate inclusion and belonging, professional and personal development, and health and wellbeing into our business culture. People OUR APPROACH Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Digital design We use cutting edge digital tools and processes to produce engineering designs that are innovative, low carbon, and safe to build, operate, maintain and demolish. Through global enterprise agreements with industry leading technology companies, we provide our staff with the latest tools available to operate at their full potential. We use our own industry-leading digital solutions platform, Moata , to help solve our clients’ pressing problems using the power of data. An example is Moata Carbon Portal , which is used across all of our projects, standardising the way we calculate and reduce embodied carbon in the assets we design and construct for our clients. Case study: BIM 360/Autodesk Construction cloud BIM 360 is a common data environment (CDE) that we use to manage our graphical data. It supports informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle for project design and construction teams. It enables multiple people to access data from a single source of information where colleagues, suppliers, and our clients can collaborate at the same time, as one team. It allows team members to interact with our 3D model design, collaborate with other team members and raise issues connected with specific parts of the model. It also ensures that our designs are following our standard information management procedures. Case study: Moata solutions – Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) We’re continuing to use our Moata Geospatial and Moata Land Management solutions in the Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) to deliver significant savings on this important piece of national infrastructure. Moata Land Management was used to provide all parties involved in project design and delivery and members of the Alliance access to the same data through a single database. This enabled a coordinated and consistent approach to identifying landowners, managing land access and survey requests with stakeholders. The solutions alone have saved an estimated £2 million over 18 months. Moata has allowed the SPA team to efficiently analyse data and derive insights, improving outcomes. Case study: Moata solutions – Living with Water Used together, Moata Geospatial and Moata Inspect aid collaboration on project data with easy data capture, review and monitoring. Living With Water is a partnership between Yorkshire Water, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, the Environment Agency and the University of Hull, working together to build flood resilience, develop innovative water management systems, and highlight the region as a great place to live, work and visit. We used Moata Geospatial and Moata Inspect to help collect digital survey data and present it on a GIS map platform with other geospatial data in a fully digital workflow. This provided a comprehensive view of the data collection and allowed the team to make informed, right first time decisions. Case study: Moata solutions - Intelligent content Moata Intelligent Content (MIC) is our digital component catalogue with easy-to-use access to a vast, fully managed library of standardised design, procurement, construction and commissioning documentation. MIC allows teams to repeat the delivery of projects to achieve our vision of increased efficiency. Intelligent Content is a vital way of using the digital knowledge capital we generate as our primary output, enabling us to deliver better services to our clients. Saltburn Gill Mine Water Treatment Scheme We have constructed a number of new mine water treatment works, including this one, at Saltburn Gill for our client The Coal Authority. Whitburn Sea Outfall We also construct sea outfalls for The Coal Authority, including this design and build project at Whitburn in the North East of England. Back Next About us Introducing JN Bentley Vision and values Publications Built in 1987 in response to severe flooding five years earlier, the Foss Barrier forms an important part of the flood defences of York. A gate can be closed to prevent rising waters in the River Ouse from backing up into the River Foss and flooding parts of the city. In December 2015 floods hit York once again, with waters rising into the electrical switch room for the incoming mains supply, rendering it inoperable. After significant involvement in the emergency response to the floods we were then engaged by the EA to deliver permanent upgrade works on site. At the core of these works is an upgrade to the Foss Barrier Pumping Station where we are increasing the capacity of the pumping station through the installation of eight new pumps and associated MEICA equipment. Each pump weighs 6.5 tonnes and is capable of pumping 6m³/second. The upgraded equipment will be housed within an extension to the existing building that will lift all critical equipment above the flood zone. To facilitate this, all equipment has been temporarily located on a purpose built platform. Foss Barrier We constructed a mine water treatment works at Saltburn Gill in the North East of England to stop untreated iron stone mine water from being discharged into the natural environment. Ochre deposits were polluting 2km of watercourse, generating large ‘ochre aprons’ on the slopes of the tributary and directly preventing salmon migration, as well as threatening 1km of Saltburn beach. The works were delivered in two phases, and comprised of the construction of four settlement ponds; each with pre-cast concrete inlet, outlet and aeration cascade structures; together with a sludge drying bed and new wetland. Saltburn Gill The first scheme we have delivered under the Coal Authority’s design and build Confluence’ framework was in the North East of England, at Whitburn Sea Outfall. A solution was required to reduce and maintain water levels by pumping from a nearby mine via a borehole to the sea. A successful test phase proved the validity of the solution – the installation of a 450m-long outfall from the mine shaft to a point 150m out at sea. To install the pipework in fragmented limestone (a rock-type susceptible to collapse), instead of drilling and then lining the void before pulling the main pipework back through, our solution saw the casing itself become the outfall pipe. Whitburn Sea Outfall A significant number of our schemes involve working with clients such as the EA to implement preventative measures to guard against issues such as flooding. A tidal surge in early December 2013 caused widespread disruption along the East Coast, with many properties flooded and extensive erosion of coastal areas. The surge entered the Humber and associated rivers, filling the River Ouse and then entering the Dutch River. Having identified the unstable banking on this stretch of river, delivered a three-phase scheme to reduce the risk of flooding to surrounding areas and properties at times of high tides. The solution has seen us construct a permanent flood defence using a combination of sheet and continuous flight auger (CFA) piling, steel tendons and rock armour to reinforce the embankment. Over £1m was invested in the temporary works at Chantry Cottages, including 25,000 tonnes of stone used for ramps and piling platforms, some of which has since been reused on other schemes. These temporary works were crucial in enabling the permanent works to be delivered safely. Chantry Cottages In 2016, the EA awarded us an extension to our Asset Repair Programme of Works (ARPW), taking it through to October 2018. The extension is reward for the hard work and dedication of the teams involved in the framework since its inception in October 2014. They have developed great relationships with the client, delivering safe, efficient and sustainable solutions across a large geographical area. The ARPW is largely focused on improving the condition of flood defences that protect properties, critical infrastructure and prime agricultural land from both fluvial and tidal flooding. Both teamwork and leadership have been essential to the successful delivery of a challenging programme. Key too has been the streamlining and pooling of construction activities and resources, driving a reduction in costs, delivery duration and carbon footprint. Our team is pictured here picking up a Team Achievement Commendation at the ICE East Midlands Awards. Asset Recovery Programme of Works The Coal Authority has a responsibility to treat mine water before it is discharged into the natural environment. One way of achieving this is to use a passive mine water treatment scheme. The scheme at Craig yr Aber, near Bridgend in Wales, involved the construction of two settlement ponds, two wetlands and two drying beds. These features remove iron from the water in an entirely ‘passive’ way – no chemicals are required to assist the process. Saturated ground conditions led the project team to use innovative bales made of recycled tyres to engineer the embankments on site. Craig Yr Aber Our scheme at Reedness is one of our Asset Recovery Programme of Works (ARPW) projects with The Environment Agency (see below). We raised flood defences to provide long-term protection to the area. Based over a 3.3km stretch of land, to meet the programme we undertook work on several fronts at any one time. We estimated a total of 8,000 wagon movements throughout the scheme and, with the villages of Reedness and Swinefleet nearby, we took steps to minimise disruption. Site teams engaged proactively with the community to alleviate concerns, making house calls and even holding an assembly at the local primary school. Awards ABOUT We integrate inclusion and belonging, professional and personal development, and health and wellbeing into our business culture. People OUR APPROACH JN Bentley Ltd is part of the global management, engineering and development consultancy Mott MacDonald, offering our clients full feasibility, design and construction services throughout the UK. Who we are ABOUT The majority of our work in the environmental engineering sector is delivered through JBA Bentley, an integrated design and build contractor that specialises in the safe and efficient delivery of low carbon solutions. JBA Bentley’s mission is simple – the company uses its ingenuity and expertise to develop and deliver sustainable low carbon solutions that make a positive difference to our clients and our communities. JBA Bentley was formed back in 2013 when JBA Consulting – one of Europe’s leading specialists in environmental engineering and management – joined forces with national civil engineering contractor JN Bentley. Its first client was the Environment Agency (EA); in the years since, JBA Bentley has established itself as a highly reputable framework supplier to the EA as part of their Water and Environmental Management (WEM), Marine and Coastal (MCF), and Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Central Hub frameworks. As JN Bentley and more recently JBA Bentley, we have also worked with the Coal Authority since 2004. Projects have predominantly involved the delivery of projects that treat water discharged from abandoned mines across the UK. We work at not only traditional coal mines, but metal mines too. We have wide experience of land drainage works for the Internal Drainage Boards and have constructed surface water storage systems and pumping stations. We have also applied sustainable urban drainage (SuDS) techniques to our projects in areas of hardstanding with our commercial clients. Environment Throughout the history of JN Bentley, much of our work has been associated with water and the water environment through work with water companies, local authorities, the Coal Authority and more recently, the Environment Agency. People OUR APPROACH Our aim is to reduce water consumption, minimise our waste, and use energy efficiently. Preserving resources OUR APPROACH We act in the best interests of our communities and society as a whole. Supporting society OUR APPROACH Digital rehearsal Digital rehearsal optimises how we plan the construction phase of our projects. It aligns design with the construction programme and drives collaboration between people and technology, enabling project teams to rehearse the construction sequence at the right time with the right set of people to identify the best sequence in terms of safety, supply-chain, operational site interfaces and temporary works logistics. Designers get a better understanding of buildability and construction teams understand the specification and any client operational constraints. Case study: Hallbank Tunnel Hallbank involved a short shutdown of an aqueduct supplying 2.5 million customers with 570 million litres of water a day. After nearly two years of main works, our client handed the entire site over to us to complete the connections. At its peak, 90 engineers on round-the-clock shifts worked at each connection. We developed a highly detailed 4D model that facilitated collaborative rehearsals with the team and ensured the operation was meticulously planned. The connections were a success, and the site was handed back to our client early. The 4D model maximised efficiency and supported collaboration between the design and construction teams. The model also helped to identify temporary works and process constraints, beyond the realm of 3D clash detection. Case study: Embsay Water Treatment Works During the investigation and tender stage at Embsay, SYNCHRO 4D was used to create a digital rehearsal to better understand sequencing on an extremely tight site. Outputs from the rehearsal led directly to programme updates, saving 10 weeks and over £100,000 in preliminary site costs. How do we achieve this? Through our Quality, Cost & Efficiency Strategy. Quality, cost and efficiency OUR APPROACH This is an overview of digital in JN Bentley, including our investment in digital delivery and our company digital transformation and how it is embedded in everything we do. Digital delivery OUR APPROACH Enabling 21st century teamwork and collaboration When our teams work at their best by collaborating with our supply chain, clients and their customers, we deliver outstanding projects. Digital technology can help empower our teams in several ways. When working with documents and files, our offices are completely paperless, using the latest cloud technology with easy-to-use processes for sharing, checking and approving. Covid-19 had a positive impact when it came to us learning how to work in smarter, more agile ways using technology. We quickly adapted to using video calls and our design and office-based staff have now adopted agile working, allowing our staff to work in different locations and in a more flexible way that suits their own work-life balance, that of their teams, and of our clients. On our sites we are deploying the latest smartphones and tablets to employees, to ensure they have everything they need to collaborate in the same way as office-based colleagues. Even our collaborative planning has gone digital - from post-it notes on the walls of the site cabins to digital whiteboards that can be accessed on any device. Microsoft 365 We deployed Office 365 and the full suite of tools it comprises back in 2016. The applications go beyond Word, Excel and PowerPoint and towards modern collaboration tools such as SharePoint, Teams and Viva Engage. These are used to great effect in our organisation to empower staff to work out loud, connect with communities of interest across the world, and work in an agile and secure way that suits them. Access to the Power Platform (Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, etc) is allowing citizen technologists to automate their own workflows and get insight from data to enable them to be more efficient and offer even more innovative solutions to our clients. Site tablets and smartphones Throughout 2023 we are deploying the latest IoS (Apple) devices to employees based on site, ensuring they can access the apps that they need to make their job easier. Miro digital whiteboard Miro can be used for collaborative planning, meeting sprints, workshops and a lot more. When used for collaborative planning on a project, it allows all stakeholders to understand their role, what they need to do and how their actions might affect others. • Augmented reality | JN Bentley and Mott MacDonald Bentley

Supporting society OUR APPROACH Augmented reality We use the latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology in project design and delivery to help us better understand challenges on site, identify design or programme clashes early and improve the safety of the construction phase. Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of the real physical world that is achieved using digital visual elements, sound, or sensory stimuli delivered via technology. In terms of construction, it allows 3D digital models to be projected onto sites through a device, such as a tablet, phone, or headset. Case study: Project Munio We used Visual Live, an augmented reality tool, to visualise the position of construction elements and efficiently plan site works for Derby County Council. This helped the site team to better understand site constraints and plan the works safely as it was a very tight and complex site location. Case study: Grimsby On this scheme we used AR to visualise below ground services. Avoiding service strikes is critical when operating below ground, so having the ability to visualise services prior to digging makes avoidance much easier and improves excavation safety.
